Got the ol boat out from the winter storage. Cleaned her all up and it fired right up. Ran for about 1 hour. Fired it up couple other times for about 5 mins or so. Finally got to take her out on the water. Ran it for about 5 min out on the water at about 20 mph or so and slowed down to stop. It was sitting Idiling shut her down for a few. When to start it back up and nothing.

Is there a Module that controls spark for this thing?

Boat is a 1993 Sea Ray 170. 3.0L Mercury.

Just tring to figure out a place to start on this thing. I know how to work on cars cause I was a mechanic for 7 years but boats are kind of a different story.

Thanks for reading

This something simple, but happend to me. Check the emergency cutoff switch under the controls. I was moving a kneeboard around one day and accidentally pulled the cutoff lanyard out with the kneeboard without knowing it. I almost started to troubleshoot an engine problem until I looked and saw the lanyard missing. Simple thing to look for.

My key is up on the dashboard not on the controls so I dont have an emergency cutoff switch. (From what I can tell) The engine cranks but no start. Im going to pull it apart this weekend and see if I even have spark.

Yea its a 50 amp sitting above the engine and its not tripped. The engine cranks fine. Just stopped after it was shut down once.

If its a 1993 boat you have a kill switch on the controls :)

Has it had a recent service fuel filters, cap, rotar, plugs ?

A '93 should have an emergency kill switch on the dash or control somewhere by law. It usually has a red lanyard with a plastic clip on one end. The switch is pretty small with a small toggle switch in the middle of it.

Find a manual for the boat on the Internet; use it to locate your kill switch. Check it before tearing things apart....

Re: 3.0 Mercuy Died after shut off

I have a 2002 3L. I have a run/stop switch on the throttle, it's on the bottom left of it where it mounts to the hull, check yours. I've also blown ignition fuses in the fuse panel, check that also. This is different than the 50 amp breaker on the engine. Either of these will kill power to the coil and keep the motor from running.
Also make sure your throttle is in neutral and the kill switch for the outdrive isn't grounding out the coil, that's the little switch on the trim plate.
Of course all you have to do to see if you got spark is pull the coil wire from the distributor, hold it off a suitable ground about 1/8" and crank the engine. If you see spark or get thrown on your butt, your getting power to the coil and it's working.

Ok GOT IT RUNNING TONIGHT YEAH!!!!!!
Heres what it was. It was simple. Boat has been sitting for about 4 days since in last ran. Turned the key and it fired right up BUT only for about 3 sec then died. Checked spark. Didnt have any. Check the spark at coil....none. Checked voltage at coil.... none.

Traced it all back to the main connector between the engine and boat. Pulled it apart and it was all Corroded up. Cleanned all the terminals off, plugged her back in, and it fired right up. Ran like it has before. Thanks for helping me get started on it

O and BTW I dont have a kill switch at all. I searched high and low for one and nope its not there not even on the controls or dash.d:)
