First time poster here, please be kind. Buddy of mine suggested this as a good resource to help diagnose my problem.
I have a 1994 19-foot Bluewater Mirage with Mercruiser 350 MAG and alpha-1 outdrive. I purchased it new and it has had the same intermittent problem since the day I put it in the water.
At random times the engine will momentarily stall, and when this happens the tachometer will peg-out at 6,000 RPM. The engine is not running at 6,000 RPM, the tach just jumps to the right peg as the engine is stalling. There does not appear to be any other common symptoms. Sometimes well take the boat out without any problems. Sometimes this will occur a dozen times during a day of family waterskiing.
Ive had the boat into the dealership at least a dozen times. Each time they would replace a part and call it fixed. Wed take it out a couple of times until the engine would stall again then take it back to the dealership.
The last time it was in the dealership (1996) they were convenienced they had found and resolved the problem. Soon afterward our first daughter was born and the boat has been in the garage ever since, I took it out and ran it once a year to burn out the bad gas, then winterize it. Basically just keeping it running until the kids were old enough to enjoy it with us. During this down time the dealership has gone out of business and the problem has re-occurred.
Im not sure what to do. Between 1994 and 1996 the dealership spent untold hours trying to figure this out under the warranty. They never did get it fixed. Now the dealership is closed and I cant afford to pay for hundreds of shop hours chasing this problem.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? What possible problem might cause both the engine to stall and the tach to immediately peg-out-to-max?
