Acts like it is starving for fuel, tried to run, on off on off. then nothing, would recrank at idle, then finally nothing at all. this is a new 6.2 mpi motor mercruiser,,,, .in a rinker fiesta vee boat. I strongly think its bad fuel, the fuel in the boat has been in since december, but i added fuel additive(heet) to it before cranking. tomorrow ill drain the fuel(about 50 gal) change the fuel filter, and refill with high test. any other suggestions?

Just a couple things :

I'm not up on HEET,when did you add it?

Before you drain the tank and try new gas ....

Try filling the fuel/water seperator with gas,and reinstalling it.If it drained back to the tank,it maybe empty, and the fuel pump can't fill it

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

I added the heet a day ago. the engine started and idled at the shop, on the trailer, didnt want to run it much, it was fine for about 3-5 min in the water, then acted as if it was starving for fuel. maybe heet cant go thru a fuel/water separator. to be on the safe side, ill change all the fuel out, hopefully that will cure it. ill post tomorrow.
I have a crew at work, and this boat lives in the middle of my shop, so it wont be a big problem ,, just where to hide 50 gal of questionable fuel
thanks

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

heet is a water remover and keeps lines from freezing, it isn't a fuel treatment AND fuel treatment needs to be added before storage, not the day before you want it to run. It stablizes the fuel so that it won't evaporate and leave behind varnish in the lines and carb as easily as untreated fuel would.

Like written above, dump out separator, refill with fresh fuel, and try again.

Next year, store with sta-bil in the tank.

If this doesn't work, then fuel could be bad, carb could be gummed up and need rebuild or (hopefully) just a good cleaning with spray-in cleaners.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

Use a portable tank to feed fresh gas and run the engine. If the engine continues to run, then gas in tank is bad. If it does not run, your problem might be somewhere else and not be gas.

If your running an additional water seperator, besides the one on the engine you will need to remove it. The low pressure pump cannot draw fuel through the two filters. The factory filter which comes on the engine assembly is all that you need.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

Tried to start the engine on the trailer this afternoon, same thing, barely hit, symptoms of fuel starvation, can hear the fuel pump on the engine kicking in, pulled the fuel filter and it was only half full of fuel, i am going to check the wiring to the pump at the tank later today. fuel in the filter looked clean, not contaminated. only running one filter, the one that came on the engine
one step closer!!

could be ignition problems. You need a manual so you can run through the troubleshooting section. It takes a lot less time than guessing.

I hope when you are running it on the trailer you have water going to it or you will need a new impeller.

If you have 50 gallons of old fuel to dispose of, run it in your lawn mower...

Yes, ran it with the muffs on the lower unit, gas appears to be ok, its just a matter of finding out why the fuel pump at the gas tank is not getting power. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

If you hear the pump than it is running.
After it quits running do you here the pump.
Doesn't your motor have an oil
pressure fuel cutoff system?
If the pressor sensor is not allowing
/working it will kill the fuel pump.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

If it were killing the fuel pump at the engine, then the fuel filter would be full. the fact that the engine is emptying out the fuel from the fuel filter tells me that the problem is in the second fuel pump, the one at the tank. the pump worked before so its something that i have unhooked or hooked up wrong. oil pressure is great, as this is a brand new motor, mpi fuel injected 6.2
its in the details

Never heard of a second pump in the tank.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

I was not saying you don't have good oil pressure.
If the sensor that feeds elec to the fuel pump
is faulty or the wires corroded and the
system doesn't know there is pressure
then it will kill the pump.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

There should be NO pump in the tank. The engine fuel system consist of the low and high pressure pump. The low pressure pump on the engine siphons fuel from the tank, if there is some type of restriction there it cannot draw fuel, symptom will be low/no fuel in fuel filter.

Check the anti siphon valve at the tank where the fuel line is connected to the tank. The valve has a check ball and spring enclosed inside it. Here's a pic.

You may also remove the pick-up tube from the tank and check the screen in it.

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

There is a pump at the tank, its not inside the tank but outside at the front, this is a cuddy boat, and the tank is in the belly of the boat, inaccessable except from a 8 in inspection plate in the cuddy area. I am going to run the engine tomorrow on a outboard tank, to eliminate any question of a problem on the engine, and work back from there. there may be somehow an incompatibility with the 97 boat and the 2006 engine, in the wiring harness area. this is a factory fresh complete engine, from mercrusier.
I will keep everyone posted
thanks

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

Aparantly, the fuel system was air locking. I didnt realize that you needed to prime a new motor before starting it, this boat had not run since december, old motor had been out since march, and even with a plug in the fuel line, it had air in it. after running it this afternoon till it quit again, approx 3 min, i filled the fuel filter up for the second time. started right up, and ran, at 1500 rpm for approx 35 min on the trailer. I was in phone contact with the distributor of the motor, Tim at protec in orange beach al. and he was a great help. hopefully most of my boating problems but not adventures will be over now. this boat, a 97 model rinker fiesta vee 266, ran 32 mph before it died, at approx 4200 rpm. with a 350 2 bbl motor, which was obviously tired, with the new motor, i hope to see a lot more perf. ill keep everyone posted on the performance, im going back to the river tomorrow after work,,,, thanks for all the advice!!!!

Re: new engine, goes dead after about 3 min,

Apologys to everyone , especially Reel Poor
I ran the boat on a outboard tank , it ran great. then I started trying to trace down the problem , seems that I was looking at a thru hull for the Marine AC and not fuel lines. I found the access plate, pulled the siphon valve, it was faulty, removed it. Ill run the boat again in the morning, and then button up everything if it runs ok.
next is installing smartcraft guages, and proping correctly
