My new project is a 1960 merc 700 Dr and need to install a new propshaft needle bearing into the gear housing. Got the old one out with alot of patience and a dremel, so now I'm wondering what is the proper way to install the new one. Anybody have any good tips to keep things straight and lined up as I try to press in? It's way down in there, and I'm not quite sure how to do without buggering things up. thanks

We use the bearing mandrel and a threaded rod to pull the brg back in from the bottom to the top (numbers must be up)

Hello Bob,
I'm not sure how that works but I am installing the propshaft , not the driveshaft needle bearing. So You cannot come from to bottom up. Thanks

DUH, I blew that one when I read DR it right over my head, if you have one use brg mandrel 91-24288 and spacer collar to center it in the bore, without them use a brg driver of the right size center it in the bore a drive it in. Heat the tip of the bullut it will help. If you ever have to remove one again fill the cavity ahead of the brg with grease ond use a shaft the same size of the prop shaft in the brg and pound on it to hydralic the brg out of the housing

Bob--using grease and a shaft to hydraulic the bearing out is the coolest thing I've heard all week. I may never need to use it, but I love it!

Thanks Bill, back years ago I was trying to get one of those brgs out of a Quicky racing unit and a fellow from the factory was listening to me cuse at it, said give here I will take it out for you in a couple of minutes, after all my misery that just what he did. I asked where he learn to do that and he said Hell I designed it. I have always wondered if it was the truth

Bob,
Thanks for the reply-I just got back from a fishing trip and read your response. I do not have access to the merc bearing tool, so I just a use the proper bearing driver and heat the area before. I was not sure if I could drive in a needle bearing or if I had to use the press in which case seems somewhat of a guessing game to make sure everything is lined up and plumb going in. Thanks for the tip on removing the old- I wish I had posted before and saved myself alot of time.

Heat and bearing driver did the trick. I think heat was a real key here as the bearing almost pushed in by hand and then a few taps on the driver. Thanks again Bob.
