i just replaced the water pump in my 1976 70 hp johnson just for preventive maintenance now i see streams of water comming from 2 maybe 3/8" holes in the drive shaft tube, never noticed this before so i pulled the unit back off re-checked and everything looks ok pump installed correctly i used omc parts i purchased the complete kit but water still streams from these holes while running on muffs it does not come out while the engine is not running it is spraying a light mist from the exhaust like it should,

I can't quite understand , where the holes are.

Some motors have holes in the water tube to cool the water pump, exhaust , etc.

They're not as big as 3/8", if I remember correctly.

Maybe you can explain better.

Or someone else who understands what your referring to will reply.

Wait a minute , if you mean the two holes in midsection.

Water coming from there is normal, usually only a small amount at idle, but increases at higher rpms.

If your using a high pressure water supply to your muffs.

Don't turn it on full force.

Re: water comming from drive shaft tube?

it is the tube that the drive shaft from the lower unit slides in during assembly of the l/u when all is assembled you can see these holes looking up from the bottom of the mid section one on each side of the shaft tube, and yes while running if i incrase the muff pressure they will squirt a steady stream, decrease the water pressure and it slows the streams of water but only with the engine running, just did not ever notice this ever before and have owned this motor for 10 years havent had it in the water but it seams to be cooling thanks
