This is for a 1991 OMC cobra outdrive on a 4.3. The manual says to replace these nuts after I take them off. What is special about them and are the readily available from an autoparts store or something? They look to be jut normal lockng nuts I just wanted to make sure.

You can probably use them again.

Volvo manual doesn't say anything in it about not reusing them.

Do they have plastic inserts in them (elastic stop nuts)? If so, they should not be used more than twice - they lose their effectiveness after that.

You could probably use the blue loc-tite, but not the red. For what 6 new nuts would cost why not just replace them for piece of mind.

Red is for permenent repairs. It gets to hard and cans cause thread damage, and if you use to much and it gets between the studs and the drive you will have a very hard time getting the drive off again.

SSteel Bolts, Nuts,+ Studs already have a tendency to Gall,+ Pull the Threads as it Is,.............

No Way I'd put Any kind of Lock-tite on them.........

'ell,..... I reuse them more than what's been said,+ I Grease them during installation.........

I don't count the times I reuse them,........
I just closely Inspect(the Plastic part) them,+ Replace when I feel it's Time.........

They also aren't stainless steel they are plated brass so they don't gall like stainless steel does.
We NEVER change them unless they are damaged, or you can thread them all the way on using your fingers. Putting them on and torqueing to 50ft lbs keeps them from loosening. Never had one come loose yet. Let alone all 6.
