Mr. LF, me and 11 others are going to Cozumel for 7 days in a couple of weeks. We plan on offshore fishing during our stay, and a visit to the Myan Ruins.

Our trip is an all inclusive deal. I understand that the food is not always the best and the drinks are diluted. What are to do's and don'ts and can you recommend any good places to eat or visit?

Don't get any ice in your drinks if purchased off the compound. Drink bottled water only. Be cautious taking showers not to swallow any water.

Your intestines will thank you.

Use the buddy system at all times during your stay.Keep a grip on your handbags and wallets at all times.Don't bring any valuable jewelry and don't leave any items in your room while fishing that you wish you wouldn't have.Besides clothes I mean.Have a good time visiting the ancient sites.

Re: Going to Cozumel, Mexico

I stayed at the Malia Resort with the whole family. Drinks were far from watered down and the food was outstanding. Plus live entertainment nightly, dancing, daytime crafts for the kids, multiple pools, relaxed atmosphere, jet ski's, kyacks, snorkling, etc on the grounds. Did you know you can get a jet ski stuck on top of a coral reef? Did you know they don't have reverse? LOL!

We stayed in the "Tower" on the right. It had just been renovated and was wonderful. Its the last resort on the strip, so there is nothing to the left but jungle and a few private residences.

We had such a nice time we went back again.

Unlike places like Jamaca, you can walk around town, take busses, wander off the beaten trail without worry. Love to take a cab downtown, wander around for the afternoon, stop where ever for lunch. Took glass bottom boat trip, took snorkling trip, took submarine trip (skip this one, too expensive for what you get).

You can see Cancun across the water. Short boat trip there, worth the visit. Have some big water/action parks there.

Stay out of the jungle without a guide.

I don't golf. Don't know why they call it a golf resort, there is not even a golf course in sight.

Unfortunatelly Cozumel is not high-res on google earth.

So "The Ladyfishes are going to Mexico."

I know you will have fun, but with 11 others you should be ready to come home after 7 days. You shouldn't have any problems as you will be well taken care of. Chief Chief .) 8)

Ohhh that place looks nice!

We had no problems with the locals. Everyone was nice and helpful. We made a point of being patient and respectful. I think it makes a huge difference.

Cozumel is wonderful!!
Scuba diving paradice!!

When you get a cab always ask what the fare will be to your destination. They are regulated and the fare is reasonable. If you get a high fare quote get out.

Brush your teeth with the bottled water. Some folks like to visit the pharmacies and buy tetracycline over the counter as a counter measure to anything they may get. Do some research on this.

Rent a car and do a self tour around the southern half of the island. The east side of the island is less crowded and very scenic.

You can go out on a booze cruise. They drag a cargo net behind a boat. You hand onto the net in a life vest and wear a mask and snorkel. Lots of reefs to see this way and they swim drinks out to you.

There is a nature park on the south tip, I forgot the name but its well known. Do some snorkling there.

We ate well, drank well and only had a wee bit of an upset stomuch. Not any full blown Montezuma revenge thing.

Try the conch fritters. Drink some Cockroaches.....

At each bar you go to try a Pina Colada....they make some FANTASTIC ones and I don't really like sweet drinks much.

Here is the only two phrases you will need...

"Uno mas cervase, por favor, senorita"
ONe more beer please, barmaid.

"Mi esposo no pagará ningún rescate"
My spouse will pay no ransom.

Have fun!!!!!

More an issue in places like Mexico City and I have not heard of a lot recently. When I traveled there frequently on biz the company took out an insurance policy on me. Now, that'll make you nervous . . .

The resort areas like Cozumel and Cancun are very safe. There is petty crime like anywhere, but the Mexican economy depends a lot on tourism and the authorities work hard to maintain a decent reputation.

Fishes,

We have spent a little time in Cancun and one short trip to Cozumel. I highly recommend a trip to Yalku, which is very close to Cozumel on the coast. Along the coast there are many lagoons called Cenotes (sp). They are brackish, but the cool fresh water and the warmer salt water actually stay separated, very strange to snorkel in and very beautiful. Some of the water parks are built in the large versions of these Cenotes. The one at Yalku is more private and very quiet.

Also, just inland of Yalku are some caves that you can snorkel in. The one we went to is called Dos Ojos (two eyes) if I remember correctly. Great experience!! Off the beaten path and you'll have to ask as I have never seen anything on a brochure. Primitive. Could be scary to some as I saw no tourist busses or official looking anything, but we think of it as one of the best experiences we have had on vacation.

The coral sand on the beach at Cancun's Zona Hoteleria (Hotel Zone) is the softest we have ever felt. We actually brought a bottle home on our first trip. Very commercial there, but very International and safe.

Have fun!
