Dies when shifting back to idle

I'm running a 350 (271 volvo) and it starts up fine and runs very smoothly when it's in neutral and throttled up to over 1K rpm, but when I pull it back to the idle position in order to then shift into gear, it dies.

Is this a problem with the electronic shift assist or the shift cable? Difficult to solve? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I had that problem with my 3.0 L. But when mine was warmed up it ran fine. It was the choke on the carburator.

Volvo doesn't use a shift assist, because they don't have a drive with a dog style clutch.
Your problem may be as simple as needing a complete tuneup and carburator adjust. When was it last done?

I just purchased the boat last week and the previous owner hadn't taken it out this year. It was still winterized from last fall, but I don't know when the last official tune-up was. I fired it up this morning and the problem has disappeared for now.

The best thing you could do is act like nothing has ever been done to the boat and do all the maintenance items needed to assure everything is in working order.
That includes fuel filters, oil changes, gear lube change, impeller change in the raw water pump, and a full tuneup. Then you will at least have a base to start from for any future problems.
You may have some water in the fuel tank or the fuel filter/water seperator. Without checking or fixing your problem it's just going to come back, and probably at a very bad time.

Good Advice. Thank you.
