I have just bought a 1979 Sea Ray 195 with the 305 228 mercruiser engine. I need to remove the distributer and have run into a problem. I am fairly competent on sutomotive engines but this is my first boat of any kind. the service manusl says loosen the clamp, slide back and remove the distributer, just like the instruction for an auto. However when I pull the distributer out (with the cap removed) it hits the fiberglas structure that goes across the engine right at the back. the distributer lack about 1to 1-1/2 inches from coming out. Is there a trick to remove this distributer. I have tipped the thing in every direction to no avail.

Welcome to iBoats

And welcome to the world of BAD boat design there are many installs that require and engine pull for what should be simple things :(

David, I have the 79' SRV 220 with the 898 305cdi and on my boat you can Dismantle the inner transom (bulkhead) by removing some trim screws, allowing access to the entire top of the motor. Can also remove the Center stern compartment on top of the transom for access to the rear of the engine Not sure about yours.

You've Just Discovered the Difference between being an Automotive Mechanic,...........
Or a Marine Technician..............

It's Usually either Disassemble parts of the Boat,......
Or,... Pull the Motor,.......

Sometimes it's a Toss Up as to Which is Easier...........................

If that portion of fiberglass is hidden by the engine cover or anything else that would hide a modification after reassembly just cut the glass enough to remove the distributer. Since it's your boat you can be the butcher. LOL

If you go that route, I would perform the job with a very fine-toothed jig saw. If the teeth are too course, it will vibrate some cracks into your glass. GO SLOW!!

If you go with Reel Poor's Idea,..........

Just be Sure that what you're Cutting Isn't apart of the Fiberglass's Structure...............

You Don't want to Weaken anything Too Much........
