HI, I have a 1886 Mercury 75hp that stalls when you put it in gear. All plugs appear to be sparking well, compression is good, the carbs have been stripped down and rebuilt, and Im' using new petrol. The manual says to set the timing at Idle to 05- degrees ATDC, but it will only idle at around 5 degrees BTDC or more, if I try to adjust to 05- ATDC it dies.
Whatever we set the timing to the engine dies as soon as you try put any load on it. helpadvise help/advise would be appreciated appriciated, thanks.

Hi, I have tried adjusting the timing with the engine in gear and under load, as it says in the manual, but still can not get to time to 0 to 5 degrees BTDC. What ever timing we set it to the engine has no power and dies. When you restart you have to rev the engine a few times in netral to clear it as if there is either too much or too little fuel in the carbs. At high revs the engine seems OK.

Re: Unable to set correct timing, and stalls when put into gear.

Sorry, newbie... I have a similar issue... Can anyone assist?

I have a 1986 Merc Black Max 150hp OB. The motor was not starting right, so I removed the plugs... and of course they are fouled. I use a premix 50/1. I replaced the plugs and tightened the throttle to where it would idle just a little higher... dying in neutral. It idles great now, with a hose. I put it in the lake, different story. Will only start if throttle is very high, then I bring to neutral and it putters out. If I try hard enough, it will stay at idle in neutral (barely) but as soon as I throw it in fwd or rvse it immediately dies. Not real sure what else to try, please help!

Callslide, time for a link-n-synch...timing must set/adjusted to synch with the carb butterflies, they should open smoothly as the throttle is advanced. A search of the forums will tell you how...or the manual for your outboard.

Re: Unable to set correct timing, and stalls when put into gear.

Hi, Many thanks for the reply. I do have the manual, and we have previously rebuilt the engine from scratch (some years ago) so are familiar with the timing set up. We have 2 throttle cams and should be able to set timing to between 0 and 5 degrees ATDC at Idle, just as throttle touches the primary pick up cam.
With the engine timed at 5 BTDC in this position it will idle, but as we adjust the timing and approach 0 degrees the engine dies.

Partially sheared flywheel key that is giving you an incorrect timing reading.

Make sure the flywheel was properly aligned when it was re-installed. If it's off a tooth or two, the timing won't be right and adjustments will be frustrating to say the least.

Have you done a fuel pressure check to ensure its not starving ?
Check that you don't have a leaking fuel line too.

Just an idea....... CF

leroyh, if compression is good check to see if prime bulb gets hard. rebuild fuel pump..not expensive about $12.00 diapham may have a small pin hole in it causing problem.
