IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

I currently own an 115593e it usually runs great until, recently it started misfiring at no wake speed Then. also at WOT it loses rpm about( half) you can feel it cut in and out .new coils plugs 4yr,, old cd unit check most things,
all but the tests with the neon test light.

I wondered if it was worth the trouble of updating the ignition from 75 to 78. 80 I don't know just wanted some input or ideas on the reliability of different years.

THANKS ANYTHING WELCOME

Re: IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

I run a 1976 115 which I have had a long time. It has never seen fresh water.

When I have had similar problems to yours, I started by disconnecting every ignition wire on the motor, cleaning the contacts, sanding the contact points, reconnecting and sealing with liquid tape. Emery boards help. Don't forget the contacts on the power pack.

Run your compression check and then the spark check.

The symptoms indicate that you may have lost or are losing a spark coil. Bad wires or a grounding problem could mimic that. A bad spark coil can kill a power pack.

Re: IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

Thanks,I changed the coils, powerpack and the plugs last season, could the power pack be bad already?I never changed the timer base I thought that was it because cyl1-3 go out then somewere in the middle of a test they will start working again.I am ready to change everything out to start off with new parts.

Re: IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

That is exactly the wrong thing to do. The right thing is to clean up the wiring and then follow the diagnostics in the service manual. That way you only replace what, if anything, is bad. I have never replaced a power pack on my 1976.

Re: IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

Did you try swapping the coils to see if the problem follows them or not?

Re: IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

Hi, Ezeke no I did'nt try that I will though.I did'nt try it because it was1-3 not sparking I thought that if two were not firing together it was more likely the cd box or a sensor coil .

Thanks

Hi! everyone Ezeke tried the coil change it did not change anything so I guess I am waiting for the voltage adapter to check peak voltage seems like a good test.

Re: IGNITION UPDATE OR NOT?

Sounds good. I will be very interested about the outcome. What spark plugs are you using?

BTW, If you look at the picture called "aft view" 5-47 around page 5-22 in the manual, you will notice a grounding wire between the starboard cylinder head and the bracket that holds the coils and power pack. It is important.
