Honda BF15 trouble

Hello,

I have been having a hard time with my BF15 (BAAS 1201315 - I don't know the year, but would like to... ). The motor will sometimes start on the first pull and run great. Other times it will start, but only putt-putt and not run; if I give it more gas it will stall. Often, if I let it putt-putt for 10 minutes it runs great. Soemtimes it will start up great for the rest of the day, othwer times I have to let it putt again. I am assuming it's the carb. I plan on cleaning it out, but have never done it before. I have a service manual, so shouldn't have too much trouble. My question is, do I need to change the gaskets and if so where do I get them? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

If it is like most Hondas, you will have to go the Honda dealer and pay the price. You might check on Google to see if anything shows or maybe here on IBoats.

Is taking apart the carb the best idea? Does anyone have other suggestions? Also, all Honda dealers are far away from me. Does anyone know of an online source?

Thanks again

Re: Honda BF15 trouble

I have never been able to find parts for my Honda 15 online. What I would suggest is that you open the drain for the carb and let all the junk run out, keep it open and pump your primer bulb to keep the fuel running. After that, (hopefully you are running a portable tank, drain it down to about 1-2 gal gas) add a can of SeaFoam to the portable tank and run you motor for a few minutes and left it sit for an hour or so and the run it some more. Hope fully this will help clean out your carb.
There is an idle adjustment on the carb also. Look at your fuel filter on the port side of the engine, make sure it is clean, if change it.
What do the plugs look like, when was the last time you changed, best not to chance with old plugs.

Thanks. I will definately try the seafoam method - sounds a lot safer than taking the carb apart for the first time. I changed the plugs and all oils, but this did nothing. Good sparks and dry plugs. I usually store the carb dry. The motor is only used 1 month out of the year. I've sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner in it without much effect...

Thanks again

OK, how did things go for you. Is it running any better?

Re: Honda BF15 trouble

I searched the web for an easy solution because my BF15 would not start accept at high throttles and would not hold an idle. I changed the sparkplugs, ran a carbi cleaner, then removed and cleaned the carbi. What I found was the Idle adjust "O' ring was partly perished. Maybe from ethanol in the fuel. So the problem could have been fixed in 3 minutes with a 20 cent "O" ring. Engine starts and runs great now. Hope this thread saves some people time in future. Ian - Misty Blue

Where was this o ring? On the idle jet or the access screw to the left of the idle jet? Mind does not seem to have one - might be my problem too!
