HELP!!! John/Evin 115hp in a Boston Whaler- Black stuff coming from jet drive

Hello everybody! I am a brand new boat owner with limited knowlege with working on engines. My Uncle from Michigan just gave me his 1994 Boston Whaler Rage15- It has a two stroke 115hp engine with a jet drive. The boat was in cold storage for the past 3 yrs- Still had fuel stabilizer in the tank. I towed it back to California and drained the fuel, 2stroke oil, gear case oil, cleaned the carb. I hooked up the hose to the back and started the engine. Started after a few tried and purred like kitten. Small amount of light smoke came out and then blackish oil-like substance also came out with the water. It seems to be coming out of the jet drive but after reading the manual I suppose it was the exaust port.

Is this normal??? I appreciate your input as I would like to get it on the water this weekend!!

if the engine was fogged then most likly normal. what your seeing is the carbon from the exhaust being fuel washed by exces fuel. sometimes its normal after long storage periods, see how it idles in the water, it can also indicate bad ign,low compression or fuel system issues.

Sounds normal to me. If you've never had a jet drive before, make sure you practice reversing before you need it, i.e. in the middle of nowhere and not approaching the dock. It takes a little getting used to and more power than a prop to get the same movement. Also be careful with lines. If any lines hit the water near your stern, immediately shut your engine down unless you absolutely can't. It will save you one great headache...

Wow thanks! I have never owned a jet drive before- Grew up with a I/O. Our friends had a jet and he taught me a lot about it. I am mostly concerned about the black oily stuff that came out with the water yesterday. It has a brand new (rebuilt) engine in it with zero hrs so I supposed I will take it to the lake this weekend, start it up and let it idle for about 10 minutes then just put-put around the lake for a few hours checking for leaks and stuff.

I get the black stuff first start every spring, just like rodbolt said: carbon. Hey, if that engine really has zero hours, you might want to check the run-in procedure as a lot of them want you to run it at 1500rpm for the first 15 minutes or so (rings)...

Sweet! I was planning on taking it to the lake this Saturday, starting it, letting it idle for about 10 minutes while watching for leaks, then if all is good, take it on the water at about 1,500rpm for an hour or so. I was highly doubting it was an oil leak since the oil I drained was clear (honey colored), and I have new 2stroke oil and fuel in it. Are there any other things that could be leaking?

Hey guys! Please help! I refilled my gearcase, hooked up the hose and started the boat again. I don't think it is carbon. It really looks like black oil coming from the outdrive. Smells a little burnt. I have drained and refilled the fuel tank, 2stroke oil tank, gearcase and replaced with new fluids. What else can there be? The only thing I havent done was flush the cooling system. DOesn;t a boat use lake water for the cooling system? Does the engine use oil to cool it? I am so confused and frustrated.

Again, I hooked up the hose to the back of the boat, start the engine (starts right up) and the flow of water coming out is about 3/4 water and 1/4 black oily substance (it balls up in the water like oil would). I don't want to keep the engine running if it is goin to ruin something. Please let me know what you think! Thanks!

No, actually it is a 115hp TurboJet (from the makers of Johnson and Evinrude). It is a 4cylinder 2 stroke engine. It is possible there is too much oil mixing with the gas. The primer bulb has been rock hard and the heat around here has been over 110 every day for the past two weeks. Any ideas?

It sounds like you're injecting too much oil in to the fuel. Isn't this an outboard motor? If so, try posting in the Johnson/Evinrude outboard section.

You might want to post in the Johnson/Evenrude forum, your engine is actually an outboard powerhead stuck on a jet pump instead of a lower unit, not an I/O with a Chevy or Ford engine and an outdrive.
You would probably get a lot more input.

I'll tell you what...They haven't been any help AT ALL! You guys are the BEST and I sincerely thank you for your time. I am still perplexed as to what I need to do so I think I will swing by the boat repair facility today to get their opinion as well. I just donl;t want to ruin the engine you know? Why can't life be easy? Hahaha!

Hey guys! Thank you sio much for your advice! All went well this past weekend. The oil worked through (there was actually minimal amounts) Exhause smoke just a little bit and I was good to go! I idled around for about 30 minutes, brought up the RPMs and then idles a little more. Yesterday I idled around for about three hours and overheated the engine. Haha!
