Having trouble with my OMC King Cobra Lower unit - shifts into reverse but slips - are there shifting cones in this outdrive? Could threads be worn on shifting cones? Boat is a 1997 Crownline w/ 7.4GL King Cobra engine. Forward went out a few years ago and I think they had to replace shifting cone

Re: OMC King Cobra Lower Unit

I am no expert but after what I have read, this is a OMC drive on a 1997 boat? .... R&Réd?

Here are some links. Interesting reading....

There was also an article today that I read on the partnership that volvo and OMC had in the early 90's. I was linked to it from a thread on this site but cannot find the link to the article. Was also another good read.

Hope this helps

Re: OMC King Cobra Lower Unit

You have what is called the SX or DP-S style drive from the time of the joint venture between Volvo and OMC.
Yes, the cone could go out and cause the problem, but they seldom go out as fast as you seem to be going through them without something being wrong.
I would suspect the throttle shift control or the cable is not allowing full throw of the shift arm on the drive.
Remove the cover and shift into forward, reverse, and neutral and by hand verify the arm is going all the way into both fwd and rev, and the shift arm is horizontal when in neutral.
