So you want to replace the 1989 88Spl with a 1997 115? Correct?

I am by no means an expert, but I did just go through this same sort of thing. I "THINK" in 1997 the electric harness changed and is now different than your Spl.

I dont think its going to be plug n play for you.

As far as the motor, well I just bought a motor on ebay, and I hope someone can learn from my mistakes.. Check compression, use your own tester..dont have one go buy one you know works!

Check little things, like magnets on the flywheel, can you move any? any hanging lower? (this almost cost me another $600!!, found one on ebay for 300) Just check it all good, see if any water in lower unit. Check that t-stats are not all coroded or gumed up. (see my post on powehead replace) if any signs of this stuff either walk away, or get some $$ off!

Good luck!! If I can help any let me know, I just did a swap!

make sure shaft length / bolt hols are the same for mounting, (if that matters to you)

Maybe someone else can confirm but I do think that those harness are different.

Good news and good news. The 115 appears to be an 98 (The model number should be 115stlec). There are adaptors to connect your 89 boat harness to the 96 & newer engine harness. However, I'd suggest getting the newer boat harness and gauges.

Just verify the model number of the 115. The one you gave is for a crossflow, basically the same as what you have. A very good motor. But if the 98 is a 60* looper, you're in for a treat.

Dhadley,
I rechecked the model #s this morning J115tslecm
S# G04455066
12/97(date of mfg?)
I've herd of the looper what is the diff. between the two?
It sounds like you prefer the looper over the crossflow, whys that? The motor looks almost identical to my 88spl.
Would I be able to use the lower unit from the 89 on the 98 if need be?
thanks
