TILT PROBLEMS

My tilt in my 1979 Thundercraft 190 Inboard has stumped me,looking for advice. My lower end will not go up or down,I've replaced the Tilt motor- I have power going to the Tilt motor. It will work some times but more not. The celinoide will click when I move the switch up or down but the motor will not come out from the water. Before I do something stupid I'm asking anyone for advice on my next move. The tilt was working fine up till 3 weeks ago.

Well, first off, all electrical connections have to be cleaned of corrosion. That means the connections on both solenoids and the especiall the ground connection.

Second, The pivot points may be gummed up with old grease. The caps need to be removed and the drive lifted slightly off so they can be cleaned and fresh Triple Guard grease applied.

Third, the tilt housing needs to be checked for water intrusion. If so, it needs a re-seal. Upon re-assembly, pack the case, gear and clutch with Triple Guard. Replace the cover and top off with the gear lube you use in the drive.

You'll most likely find your proplem with the first and second step.

How was the hammer coupling at the end of the tilt motor?
Did it have the spring action it needs? Was the motor all corroded up from water getting in?

What is the hammer coupling at the end of the motor? The tilt motor is not the proplem, it's been looked at.

I take all of your advice - clean all connections, check tilt housing for water intrusion and add new grease. Thanks

At the end of the shaft at the top there should be a small coulping.this is called a hammer coulping there is a spring inside
that allow the shaft to move without a load for about 90 degrees.
this gives the motor time to build up torque to lift the unit.I believe
I read that if the spring is broke you will have a lot of problems trying to rase the unit. When you see it,it will hace 2 ears on each side that couple together. They will be apart, if you take the coulping in your hand and turn them in a twisting motion they will come together . They are spring loaded the spring might be broke causing the problem.

disconnect the wire to the tilt motor and connect a test light. flip your switch and you should get a light do the same for the other connection. if you dont get a light its probobly a bad cyliniod. if you get light then check the tilt mechanisn outside your stern drive replace any o-rings and gaskets and if that looks good then your hammer clucth and shaft must be messed up.I had just paid 135.00 for a new tilt motor and 45.00 a piece for 2 new hammer clucths and key ways. i also put in an o- ring washers and gaskets.

FYI. be carfull removing the hammer clutchs and try not to damage the spring between them, that part is no longer available. at least not for a 69 omc.

A test light or DVM is OK to use, but in this case a poor contact may pass enough current to light the light or give a seemingly good voltage reading. However under load the resistance prevents enough current to drive the motor.

Make sure you test with the motor connected in circuit.
