Illegal to dispose of in a landfill.
Around here, you have to pay someone to take it, so they can recover the semi precious and heavy metals, and make a living.
Most charities won't accept something that old. Those that do are just being polite and they really don't want it - they'll just throw it away for you. I was very involved in the computer refurbishing program at my high school - we took donated computers and fixed them for use in the school or other charities. We didn't even bother with Pentium ones and twos, they are just as useless to schools as they are to you and me. We literally had truck loads of donated garbage that we had to pay to dispose of.
That was 2-3 years ago...they're even more useless now.
Thanks, all! I'll check on interest at local trade schools, but if all else fails, we do have a local recycling center that will take it.
I'm currently using my laptop, and I purchased a USB keyboard for it, which makes it a reasonable alternative. I did manage to save the contents off the harddrive before it became terminal, so all is not totally lost.
PW2, check in your area for any "freecycle" groups on yahoo.
freecycle.org to find one around you.
Everything has to be free and I am sure there will be someone to take it off your hands.
