I have a 18hp Evinrude fastwin outboard with an electric start that will turn over but the engine will not "catch" and start. Any ideas as to what may be the problem? I have replaced the spark plugs and know that gas is getting into the engine. Someone metioned it may be the coils? Does this motor have coils? I am learning! Thanks! ADAM

Welcome to Iboats, adam!

You're going to have to start with a little basic diagnosis. Start by removing the spark plugs (or using your old ones) and lay them against the side of the engine and see if they spark when you crank it. If that checks out, mix a little fuel (24:1) and put it in a spray bottle like a windex bottle. Spray the mix down the carb's throat and see if it will catch on that.

Tell us what you find at that point and we can go from there.

Also, the 18hp was produced for over 15 years, and quite a bit longer if you include the 20 and 25hp variants. We're going to need a model number of the nameplate.

Thank you, Paul. I will try what you have mentioned, get the serial number, and let you know the results. ADAM

While you have the plugs out, check the compression as well. Should be 80+ as I recall.
