The task is complete. I have R & R'd the thermostats and there was no question that the old ones were caked with calcium or other crud. No drilling, no power head removal, just a lot of patience and usefull tips from the folks here at iboats. Thank You to everyone who have replied to my posts! d:) I have pictures of the entire process and when I have time will create a link.

One curiosity is now the engine runs cool as a cucumber. I shoot it with my infrared gun and the heads show about 110 degrees. She's running fine but, my other motor that is identical runs at about 143 degrees which is to spec. I've pulled the hoses and checked the thermostats through the hose hole and they appear to not be stuck in the open position. How are the relief valves suppose to work? They were a BIG pain the @ss to get everything back in and the bolts started. I'm pretty certain everything is assembled correctly since I took pictures and can review what I did. I'm not too worried about the engine running cool since the water is pretty warm here. She starts right up, idles good, and no o-temp warnings after several minutes on the muffs. Water is coming out the exhaust ports just like my other motor, out the prop and out of all the other places as normal. Interesting though that my pressure gage on the dash shows almost nil for water pressure until I rev it up. Tell Tale looks fine. I checked for kinks in the hose to the gage. I'm thinking that the gage hose may have some crud in it since I ran the water hose through the heads with the thermostats off to get any junk out of the system.

The relief valve open up when you get the boat up to speed. The higher water pressure caused by the boat going throught the water causes them to open. Basically, it is like opening the flood gates, permitting a significant increase in cooling water to cool the engine at higher speeds. At this point the thermostats are overridden and the engine will generally run cooler than 143 degrees.

Thanks for the info! I've just been running it on the muffs. Haven't had it in the lake yet. New impeller a few weeks ago and now new thermostats. It's running so cool I suspect something in the assembly is stuck open. I'm going to wait until I run it at the lake to decide if I'm going to mess with it anymore.

Did you glue the cork gaskets to the black plastic plate berfore installing the thermostats? If not, perhaps the cork gaskets got pinched or out of place and water is leaking by them instead of going thru the thermostat bodies?

did you use the factory stainless steel thermostats that are stamped 143° or an aftermarket brand that were brass?

Didn't glue the gaskets isince it wasn't part of the OMC manual procedure. After market kit that were brass from Sierra. Are the ones from Sierra set to a lower temp?

Here is the kit I bought.

Kit is part # 18-3673
