Hi all,
I just purchased a replacement set of controls off ebay for my 1970? 650 thundrbolt outboard. The ones I bought are identical except for the pins that goes into the outboard. I was wondering if I can splice in the old with the new? Mine has a 7 pin male on the outboard and the new one has a 7 pin male on the cable. If I can splice it, where would be the best place to do it? Insinde the ignition or on the cable somewhere? Thanks to all who reply!! Great site! Googen99

Re: controls

The reason there are differant plugins is some engines are battery ign and some are alternator driven CD plur the wrong one in and you have ruined alot of expencive parts. Post the part numbers that are on the plugs and we can probably tell what they fit

Re: controls

The olny numbers I can find are on the old cable, 45876.
No numbers on the new ones. The older cable has 2 larger pins that the new ones dont. If that helps. Getting a sick feeling here:( Googen99

Re: controls

googen, goto the Rapair electronics site and you will find pictures of the merc cable ends and a explanation of the color codes along with part numbers. To my knowledge Mercury never built a male harness plug, can't you just swap your old harness to the new box

Re: controls

Laddies,
Yes, thats what I'm asking about. I would swap cables but should I do it at the ignition? Is the repair electronics site on this site? Thanks again. G

Re: controls

You must have them hosted at a site like photobucket.com. It's free. When you post them here, click on the yellow box and paste the URL of the pictures there...Don't try to use the "Attachment" feature...

Re: controls

Your old cable: Red = positive from battery.
Black = negative from battery
Yellow goes to the neutral safety switch
Grey = choke
Orange or Salmon = Motor off
White = positive from ignitionswitch
Brown = tach signal.
New cable: Should be the same.
