first time out this yr fired up no problem took off on the river full throttle for 30 minutes. Shut it down for 30 minutes. Fired back up no problem drove back to the docks full throttle 30 minutes once at the dock throttled down for approach engine started to stall and finally did.
went to start up again engine turned over very slow couple cranks at a time then a few quicker ones and finally fired up again. Normally the second I turn the key it's running. (this was odd). Anyway this past weekend took it out to the lake launched and went to fire it up same thing wouldn't go Starter very hot as well as the positive terminal on the battery. Yet my engine tilt, lights and pump all work fine. Had to put a booster on it to get it going. Another odd thing once we got it going and headed out on the lake. Got to where we were going shut it off for about 3 hours. When the time came to head back fired it up. (turned over very fast like normal)
Half way back stop for a quick minute at at buddies dock. Turned it off for 5 minutes would start again
turns over very slow. Put the booster back on which now had a low charge on it. Wouldn't work. Kept try without the booster. Out of the blue starts cranking normal and starts.
Question does it sound like a short in the solonoid bad stater cables?????? At a loss.

Thanks in advance for any ideas

sounds more like a bad ground to me, make sure the starter bolts are tight for a solid ground and check the ground itself to make sure there is no corrosion.

Actually does seem to be corrosion within the positive cable at the battery terminal end. I'll change both and try that. Thanks
Hey one more thing if you don't mind.
Can't throttle up slowly have to put it down hard to get going and back off right away. Most of the time that works 75% but sometimes 25% I just stall everytime no matter what I try. Can't tell if it's starving or flooding.

Thanks again

Re: 1983 70hp Johnson 2 stroke

First time out at the lake I never had it running wouldn't start. Didn't have a chance to heat up.
Water flow is great brand new pump.
Really good stream.
What was heating was the starter and the battery terminal from too much cranking. Bad ground is probably what's going on. cars do the same thing.

Thanks for the response

I would check your timing advance, sounds to me like the timing is advancing before the carbs get throttle. I would do a search for "link and sink" for your engine.

Do you know the settings for this motor. (procedure)
Not that familiar.

Thanks

Must have the manual for that one. It's too involved to try and explain here.

Sounds like the starter motor brushes are on their way out. As they wear down they can make intermittent contact with the armature of the motor. Brushes aren't hard to replace, or you can find a new starter. Not uncommon or terribly expensive...

Re: 1983 70hp Johnson 2 stroke

Thanks for the replys guys.
Just one more question when I tilt my motor up over time fuel runs/leaks out of my carbs Makes a big mess inside the compartment of the motor everytime.
I've been told by the guy I bought this motor from that 2 strokes do that. Is something not right gasket wise or do I have a bigger problem.
Thanks again for the help
Really appreciate it.

Re: 1983 70hp Johnson 2 stroke

The fuel leaking out of the carbs when the engine is tilted indicates a problem with the needle valves, in the fuel bowls, not seating properly which allows fuel to continue to flow even though the bowls are full. The ends of the needle valves are rubber and wear over time. Based on the fact that you are also having trouble throttling up, and it sounds like the boat sat for a while without being used, I would just purchase the entire rebuid kits for the carbs and do a rebuild while you are at it. The kits have the needle valves in them. Also make sure the level of the floats in the fuel bowls are set properly. The kits are not very expensive and rebuilding the carbs should not be too much of a problem if you are "mechanically inclined". I'm not sure where I seen it but there is a web site out there with a good video on rebuilding Evinrude carbs.

Going for the carb kit
Anyone have any pointers for me.
Never done it before.
I am mechanically inclined however.
Cars mostly.

Thanks in advance
