Got a Wiring question

This is about my 1962 40hp Johnson again although seems the same on my 28hp too. there are 6 wires besides the 2 main starter wires in the wiring harness. there are a yellow and green wire that are just spare, a brown, white, and 2 black wires. my question is what do these wires do and can I run the motor without wiring it up? can I just pull start the motor and go? The boat I have has a need for some re-wiring and I have no real clue where to start. any help would be great.

Re: Got a Wiring question

No one brave enough to delve into the wiring? I was affraid of this. I know the white wire is from the Selenoid. thats about it, just need to know the brown and the two black, could the black be ground wires?

Any help?

If you trace the two blacks, I think you'll find they go up into the magneto from the bottom. I think these are connected to each of the two sets of points. When shorted, they kill the engine. You should also have a wire going to the choke, maybe the brown?

Totally a blind shot in the dark here, but does the brown go to the starter relay? Or, is that built into the Solenoid unit?

I know nothing about this motor, but do wiring on almost everything that has a crankshaft and even some that don't.

o.k. this might help explain what I'm talking about. There is a black wire going to the middle of a pump? and a white wire to the mounting bolt of the pump? then a brown wire goes to the cylinder head. the other black wire goes to the magnito I think, it goes up anyways under the pull starter.

That one wire that goes into the cylindar is the temp sensor. If you slide the rubber and expose the connector and then touch the motor with it -- it should sound your warning system.

O.K. the switch I have has 6 connectors on it. can someone help me figure this out?

S: this is the yellow wire right? (Start circuit)
C: not used?
A: this is the accessories through the switch?
M: this would be the black wire right? (ground)
B: this is the accessories not through the switch?
M: this is the other black wire? (stop circuit)

where does the power (green) wire connect?

any help would be great

Re: Got a Wiring question

That thing is a vacuum cut-off switch. That motor has a pecularity in that if you rev it up in neutral it won't slow down, just keeps revving. The vacuum cut-off switch senses that condition and cuts out one cylinder till the motor slows down.

The white wires going to it complete the starter solenoid coil winding circuit through the safety switch on the magneto plate and also serve to disable the vacuum cut-out switch at high throttle settings.

Send me a PM if you want a wireing diagram

You should not start disconnecting things. They are there for a purpose.
