clunk at forward gear

Hello everyone, I own a 1989 110 evnrude. Recently when I am driving, at high or low speeds trim up or down doesn't matter, I will get a clunk as if I hit a log or something. Now it is more often. Does anyone know what this may be. Is it weak hydraulics, or is the drive coming out of gear.
Thanks in advance for any help

Re: clunk at forward gear

It sound like the clutch dog and/or forward gear are worn. You will have to remove the lower end and insect the gear case. If the ears on the clutch dog are worn or rounded off it will have to be replaced. Also inspect the forward gear where the clutch dog meshes with it. If the corners are worn or rounded it will have to be replaced as well. On some motors the clutch dog can be reversed, but you will still have problems with it clunking in reverse if you do this.

I would suggest getting a repair manual before you try dismantling the gearcase. Be careful when sliding the clutch dog off of the prop shaft - there is usually a spring and two detent balls under the clutch dog. The spring and balls tend to shoot out when you slide the cflutch dog off so be careful not to lose anything.
