I am think about converting an omc 350 pestolite standard ignition to electronic ignition. Does anyone have any advice, are they good or bad? Is there any brand to stay away from? is they a better way to go?

Re: Electronic Ignition Conversions

I don't know about the Prestolite kits, but I just recently converted my points style ignition on my Volvo AQ130C 4 cylinder engine using a Pertronix kit and I am quite pleased. Easy to install and the results were impressive...ease of starting and overall smoother performance over the entire RPM range.

Re: Electronic Ignition Conversions

I switched my motor to the Petronix set-up and it was an easy conversion, motor seems to run better, ( crisper throttle response ) startes a little quicker, I've ordered a Petronix II system with a new coil, with some luck it will be a little better, ( had some extra ebay money ) I'll open up the spark gap to .40, the Petronix II is well suited to a cruising RPM range of 3000-3900 RPM, just remember to reset the idle timing with a timing light when the engine is fully warmed up with the grade of gas that you normaly run the boat on ( point timing is somewhat differant that electronic timing! )

ign timing is just that, it setting the spark to occur at the proper point of piston travel as measured in cranshft degrees of rotation.
I am not a big fan of petronix but the delco EST setup works very well, is easy to adapt to shift inturrupts and parts are obtainable through sierra merc and volvo.
the petronoix,if actually installed correctly ,seems to work. but it wont do anything more than a WELL maintained point system.
