Is this normal if you engage slowly ? I just had my upper gearset replaced and was told that this was normal and that I should never try to engage slowly, and that any boat would do that? So then how do you go about cruising to dock?

Confused and new at this..........

Re: Gear sound?

I was told that my merc alpha 1 would "grind" when changing from fwd to rev or vice versa even if it was brand new because there isn't a clutch... It sounds legit to me...

Most Cobras built prior to 1994 have a clutch dog on the prop shaft. It has lugs in it that engage spaces on the forward and reverse gear as you shift.

When you shift directly to the detent on your remote control, engagement is direct, full, and as intended. When you "ease" into gear, you are running a lathe or milling machine. (removing metal from the pieces above mentioned) not a good habit,or one you can practice long without spending $$$.

Ditto what DPH said.
It will take some practice, but put it into gear with authority. A single clunk is good. a ratchiting sound means the guy that fixes your drive will be seeing more of you in the futue.
