Hey guys, 1973 Chrysler 130, that keeps overheating and it's making me crazy. I've replaced the impellor, and it's still overheating. I've checked the T-stat (or where there once was), and it seem to not be getting any water. However, there is water coming out of the exhaust port that is above the waterline. I don't think that there is a blockage anywhere, because I can fill up the top hole with water and see it run out of the motor. Also, when the motor is running, it feels like it is pumping air out of the tstat hole....HELP please!

Try buying a new tstat and put that in and see if it helps. It might increase the water pressure. First take a garden hose and back flush it through the tstat hole with the lower unit off.

I've already done that a few times, but not with the lower unit off. Yesterday I took the head off, and didn't see any blockages. Then I took that plate off the left side of the motor, and there was a bunch of sand in the lower left corner. I cleared it out, and am going to put it back together. Hopefully this will fix it.

You are lucky. When I took my port side exhaust gaskets off I broke three screws from corosion. Sounds like you found the problem though. If it is fixed I would get a thermostat in there. The motor will idle, and run better with one in then it will without one.

Well, I'm about to find out if it is fixed, I let the RTV sit overnight to let it cure. Let's hope for the best....

Still overheating...when I take the thermostat cover off and run it, water should come pouring out right? All I am getting is steam. When I first took it off though, it looked wet...

Ok, water is getting to the thermostat. I don't think that it is overheating anymore, because once my gague reads 200, I shut it off, but you can still touch the motor for a few seconds before it starts to burn. After talking to a few guys, they think that the temperature sending unit might be bad, but it's just a bolt looking thing. Called a parts guy, and they don't make them anymore. My 120 has the same looking part, only the stud isn't as long into the head. I put that one in anyways, and my temp gague didn't give me a reading at all.

Just replaced the gague, the old one was pegged at 200, and bit the dust. New gague is in, but still reads hot. Do you think it could be the temp sending unit?

Re: Overheating Chrysler 130

Not sure how they work but this is my guess. Either two wires coming of the temp sending unit or the body is ground. My guess is if you measure with an ohm meter between the orange wire (my guess it is an orange wire) and the body or second wire you will either see a short or an open or something real close to zero ohms or something in the high megohms. Once the sensor approaches 200 degrees it will reverse. If it was open it will now be short or short will now become open. If you can remove it you can try boiling water and see if you can get it to trip in the boiling water. Water boils at 212 degrees or use a candy thermometer to test the temp. You should be putting out more then just steam. My guess is the impeller is bad, no impeller key or the water pump is pitted or deformed. Another area is the grommet that holds the water tube into the power head.

Here is another test you can do. Remove one or two of the exhaust screws you took out to remove the exhaust gaskets. With the motor running water should be shooting out of the holes where the screws were. This will at least tell you if you got water getting up there. Also do your testing in a test tank or a lake. Water muffs dont work well on a chrysler.

Oh yeah the guage. Is the original guage custom or standard equipment. I thought that the orange wire went to a horn which would be on or off instead of incrimental that would show different levels of heat.

Orange wire is temp. New gague is in, it works good. Temp rose slowly until about 130, until it shot up to 200. I'm thinking the sending unit is bad. BTW, there is only one wire coming from the sender, and it's orange. Called the local Chrysler guy, and he said it's an obsolete part. I found http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...ch_in_category=t&view_id=271503&page_number=1
on Iboats, apparentley it's a universal thing that will work on my motor too. Going to see if they have that around here tomorrow.
