i recently picked up a seaswirl with an omc engine and outdrive, but the outdrive was torn apart. i picked up a boat with what i thought was the same stuff, but the hull was shot. the steering on the one i have is by a gear but the parts one has the cable. is there a peice that can go in the outdrive for the gear or do i have to switch the steering? thanks for any info.

Re: OMC Sterndrive ?'s

Don't ya think a year and model number would help, or do you think OMC only made one type of engine and drive package in 30 years of buisness.

Re: OMC Sterndrive ?'s

Here's a dose of good manners...

First of all, you guys are right... He should have first read "read this before you post" thing, but he didn't. He's not the first and won't be the last. He came on here with a legitimate question and wanting help. Instead, he got a sarcastic response, mixed in with some good advice on how to post so he could get some help.

HE WAS VERY WRONG IN HIS RESPONSE TO THE SARCASM, but as ambassadors of this forum, should we immediately respond with sarcasm? What do you think his second post would have sounded like if he were told...

"Please read the thread about "Read this before you post...", then help us help you by giving us more information like year/make/model/etc. We can't help you with the little information you gave."

I'm sure he would have responded in kind.

I know some of you get assaulted with "stupid" questions and/or questions that have been asked a thousand times and could be answered if the search function were used more, but try to remember, if you can, what it's like to post a question for the first time.

Rupert- I'm new here too, but just as a general FYI about ANY internet forum or BB, do a little poking around for 'site rules' or 'posting guidelines'. It will save you alot of grief (as I learned as a newbie on another forum long ago... lol)

And if you're going to venture forth into the land of internet forums, you better not have too thin a skin or you're gonna get bruised up!d:) These guys (and gals) are very friendly and helpfull, but they all have their own ...uhhh...."personalities". o:):devil:d:) You'll figgure out quick enough that we're all insane and it's nothing personal. :%d:)8)

Hope you stick around join the madness!

Hey! I'll take a large with extra butter over here! d:)

Re: OMC Sterndrive ?'s

my response would have been nicer if his response wouldnt have been sarcastic, and i never said anyone was a bad guy. now i know omc didnt make only one "engine and drive package" because i have 2 different ones. now i do not have registrations or titles for either of them so i do not know specifics. i am new to the boat scene and just thought maybe someone who has worked on them could give me a simple answer. guess i was wrong.
the tag on the engine of the good boat gives me this:
ENGINE, Model # - 384STMRCNC; Serial # - J 757744. OUTDRIVE, Model # - 983159; Serial # - J 316948.

I will get the ones from the parts boat tommorow.

Rupert, Being polite will go a long way on this forum.
DonS is one of the best and smartest people we have on here.
Without him there would be thousands of boats that would be in the scrap yard by now or someone would have paid big bucks to get them fixed without Dons advice..
Sorry, but we stand behind our most valued members.
So maybe an apology would be in order!

Re: OMC Sterndrive ?'s

Well, my manual lists 1964-1975 and you're not in it. Any Idea of the years of these boats? Might help someone find your info.

Not meant as a slight to you, and you may not even realise it, but your posts seem to come across as very hostile. I find it necesary to pay extra attention to my P's & Q's when on these forums just to make sure someone doesn't mis-interpret my intended meaning.

And it's best NOT to respond with hostility to a post unless it is a blatent personal attack. It's easy for a remark meant to be tounge-in-cheek to be taken as a personal insult. You can't hear the tone of voice on an internet forum, so it's best to assume their intentions are good until they show otherwise.

Remember, WE're the newbies here. It's been a looong time since I was a Cadet (I was Army!) but I remember the score. We got two ears and one mouth, and should use them in proportion!d:)

Re: OMC Sterndrive ?'s

i am told by a member on here it is a 1986. i emailed seaswirl with the numbers i found on the hull and am waiting for a reply. i do not mean to seem hostile, its just i asked what i thought was a reasonable question and get a smartass reply back. sorry i didnt read the "read before posting" thread ... my mistake. then more people reply with smartass things. my first impression of this forum is that unless you know every little detail about your boat, no one will help you. so im sorry if they seem hostile.

Compliments of Boatfix:

OMC_SD81-85.gif

According to your numbers that would be a 1982 3.8L V6 with a Stringer 800 and Tru-Course steering.

Just like mine, what a coincidence.

Re: OMC Sterndrive ?'s

Okay, the popcorn is gone, and someone still owes me some BUDS.

I'll try later on your OMC stringer drive (that's what you have {evidently 2 of} and get you some answers.

You may not need them as responses are piling in.

Part of the Forum anger is due to your frustration with your problem boat/motor/etc.Part is due to the main answering posters needing more info to form an opinion.

And on the days we ALL have done 10,12 and 14 hrs,

look out
