There should be a plate somewhere inside the boat saying what the max hp is for the boat. A lot more than just the length goes into making that determination.

Most 12'ers max out at 10hp.

I've had 16'ers that were rated for up to 20hp.

I also have a 13'er that I wouldn't use more than a 4hp on.

12 foot ... max hp +/- 6hp .... 17ft (row boat) +/- 30hp

Here's the USCG guidelines for boat builders:

Multiply length times transom width (in feet) to get a factor.

..Factor....max hp
up to 35......3
36 - 39........5
40 - 42......7.5
43 - 45......10
46 - 52......15

*but* if you have a flat bottom/hard chine, go down one level.

Factor over 52:
Transom height less than 20" *or* tiller steering:
Multiply the factor times 0.8 and subtract 25. Round up to next multiple of 5.

Transom height 20" or more *and* remote steering:
Double the factor and subtract 90. Round up to next multiple of 5.

So if your 16 footer is 4 feet wide and 15" high at the transom, your max would be 30 (16 x 4 x .8 - 25 = 26.2 round up to 30).

Had a 12' Lowe Lake John rated for 10 hp. 7.5 ran it great with tiller steering. Would not have had a problem running a 10 if I had one to run on it at the time.

14' Alumacraft, back in the '60's when they were a rounded, one piece hull. Ran a 33 Johnny with remote control, side console. Ran out great, real smooth. Super small water boat.

Currently running a 90 hp Merc on a 17' alum bass boat. Runs 50+ mph. Have no problem with that. Nice and stable. BIA rated for a 130. Don't know what I would do with a 130 on this boat. Have to wear goggles as it is to keep my eyes from watering so that I can see where I'm going; even with prescription glasses to deflect the wind.

Best I can do.

Now you can see how my boat got rated so high. The transom is flared way out at the top with a very wide top cap (Gunwale). The bow is so sharp the the first 2 feet probably don't weigh 50# and the cap extends well forward of the hull where both sides join.
