I have an Evinrude 1955 FasTwin 15hp motor which is extremely difficult to turn over with the manual rewind starter. I am not weak! Turns over nicely with no plugs. I am using specified plugs J8C, so it is not plug/piston interference. Engine in trash barrel in water. Engine is in neutral. Any ideas?

Heres my advice.. LEAVE IT IN THE TRASH BARREL AND PUT IT AT THE CURB. Problem solved d:) When was the last time u used the motor because the piston could be sticking to the cyclinders.

No comment on the second quote...only to say, lay off the sauce, it's too early yet.
Sounds like the shifter is in neutral but the lower unit ain't. If that's not the case, does the recoil work well all the time? No binding, etc.? Might want to run a compression test and put a light in the jug holes to see if there is something amiss in one of the jugs.

Got it running with combination of rope on flywheel and drill with socked on flywheel nut.

Puzzled why it so hard to turn over.

Where can I get unusual parts like the black rotating sleeve on the tiller arm?

Alan, tyvm for advice.

I DID get it to start. Removed rewind starter, ussed combination of rope and electric drill with socket on flywheel nut. Now have to set carburettor, etc.

However, I am puzzled why it should be so hard to turn over. Any ideas?

OMC chart says use cooler J6C. Gap .030" Who's specification are you using?

If it turns over nice and smooth without the plugs in, the pistons can't be stuck or the lower unit froze up. But I will tell you it'll be hard to pull over that 19.94 CID engine when it's not actually mounted to the transom of a boat due to compression.

Check out NYMarine.ca for the grip. Many other parts are still being made. Ignition, water pump, etc.

Paul, thank you very much for the tip. I expect that mounting it on transom and the different angle at which I will consequently be pulling will make a huge difference. I found a small shop nearby for the non proprietary stuff for ignition, water pump, etc. They are really helpful. I will also try the source u mention.

This seems a nice motor.

Again thanks for the real help, unlike the other respondent who suggested junking it. I like old things. My wife is one. And so am I!

Alan, your advice is as good as your spelling. I think you meant "nobody," not "no body." "Nobody" means not any person at all, while "no body" means without a body.

I had hoped the presentation of my problem had made plain that the motor turned over with difficulty only with the plugs in. Paul I think hit it exactly.

Cheers,
Bruce

Re: 1955 FasTwin 15 hp turns over hard

How about this. Maybe there's a lot of carbon build up on the pistons and cylinder head which results in higher compression than normal. Higher compression would make it harder to turn over with the plugs in but not with them out. Just a guess, but who knows with a 50 year old motor.

You exposed me! As I reread my response to you I realized that what I thought was humor was a stuffy retort. My apologies.
