I have an 89 evinrude. I have spark, but when i look into the carbs, i don't see any fuel going into it. Is there something that i am missing? I would like to know why I can't get the thing started. Is there a part that could be broke, that the fuel goes through? I have replace the whole fuel line, new head gasket, new filters, and have had the carbs rebuilt. Hope someone answers soon.

You probably won't see any fuel going in while it's just spinning over. Lets start at the beginning. Explain your starting proceedure. Now, assuming the motor has timed spark, compression and the carbs are OK here's what's worked for us --

1- Prime the fuel system by pumping the bulb until firm. This will fill the carb bowls and also send fuel to the primer.
2- Turn the key to "On" but do not engage the starter.
3- Push the key in for an 8 count (or so). This opens the primer and allows the fuel thats under pressure to be released into the intake area.
4- With the throttle in a fast idle position, turn the key to "Start" to engage the starter. The motor should start almost instantly.

You may have to bump the primer a time or two until the motor warms up.

Oh yeah, we're also assuming that there's gas in the tank and the fuel line is connected. d:)

Re: 100 hp evinrude trouble starting

I've got similar problems with a 70 h.p., just bought it, started with mufflers 3or 4 times and the boat ran fine for about 45 minutes when I put it on the water after idling for 10-15 minutes went to go again and the motor really bogged down and wouldn't kick out of it. I completely drained the tank, replaced the plugs and sprayed out carbs. I did find some trash in the filter and cleaned. I put it all back together and can't get it to start, choked it, full throttle and so on. Checked the plugs and they seem dry for some reason I'm not getting any fuel back to them. l'll try the 8 sec. deal but is there anything else I might be missing, would the electrical system have anything to do with it. While waiting for some gaskets I figured I'd work on my fish finder problem and unhooked some wires under the dash and pulled a couple switches that supposedly didn't work, another smart thing I've done since I bought it. Not only have I managed to shut down a motor that ran but now I've got wires hanging under the dash and I'm not sure where some of them go!
