The real issues if you're deciding between the two are:
1) Which is easier to work on from a tech standpoint?
2) What service dealers do you have in your area and what are their capabilities/reputations?
3) Most importantly, what does the boat you like come with?
Most problems with marine engines seem to stem from neglect, either not doing the maintenance or having it done, or improper / total lack of winterizing. Think about how many freeze damaged engines you read about on just this site...
Engines are just like everything else, the way they will treat you will mirror the way you treat them. When you're buying a used engine, be it in a car, boat, tractor, whatever, you will be far better served by focusing on the level of care and service it has received vs. who made it and what they think about it.
