Re: Oxidized Gelcoat Clean-up

I compounded the hull of my 88 Sea-Ray with Star-Brite medium cut rubbing compound and a Millwaukee 11 amp variable speed polisher. It took about 2 hours and all the after photo's are BEFORE wax.

Looks great. I don't understand the orbital polisher comment.?. That is a Milwaukee orbital polisher...

Nice job, for future reference if you really want a stunning and very easy finish try Mcguires compounding Foam pad. It is extremly durable i never lost ANY foam compounding a boat (hit a few rails to) when your finished you just rinse out the pad spin it up water's gone and use it as a waxing pad.

For what ever reason it cuts very uniformly, doesnt bind or dig in, wont burn, doesnt self destruct and you end finish is like glass.............for what its worth i"ll never use a cloth bonnet again.

I have a foam pad I'll have to try it next time. The orbital polisher does not have the power or RPM to properly make the compound cut like it suppose to. That polisher is a varible 0-1750RPM 11 amp motor and it is circlar polisher, the orbital buffer make small random circles and most are single speed, you can buy orbilals for 30. or so that Milwaukee is 200.We just got done waxing it with Collinite I'll post the finished pics later....

I think he must be refering to a 'random orbital polisher"

They are absolutely great for polishing cars or boats whos finish does not need to be 'cut'. You cannot hurt your paint with one of these and it cuts out a lot of elbow grease getting the wax off.

Nice work blulunch. A bit of a shine make it a new boat.

Hey!! I can see myself!!! 8)

Good job, looks great.

I did my boat last spring. Removed all the hardware and buffed for a week to get it to shine like I wanted it then sealed & waxed. Shines like a diamond and well worth the work

Re: Oxidized Gelcoat Clean-up Wax Done { NEW PICS}

Ted, I have a '88 19' seville. It is very nearly identical to yours except mine is a heavily oxidized red. Several times I have used four cans of heavy duty rubbing compound, and a power buffer without a good result like you achieved. The results I achieved were hardly worth the effort and I finally gave up trying.:/

Judging by the fact that you still have the original seats, motor box vinyl etc, I can only guess that you either keep it in a garage, don't use it or take meticulous care of it. I do none of these things.d:)
