I have replaced the ignition trigger on my BlackMAX 200 (ser # 6513852) and am trying to set the timing, my Clymer manual says the setting of 22deg BTDC @ cranking speed (inital setting) is this right? Then 20deg BTDC @ 5400 rpm... Man I am lost on this

welcome to iboats smokey!

this is the mercury outboards forum, not the yamaha forum. you will get much more responses from the yamaha experts rather than the merc experts.

Smokey,
This is very confusing the way they word this. What they are saying is you can either hang off the back of your boat at 60 mph and set the timing to 20 deg or you can do it standing in your driveway and set it at 22 deg and it should come out to 20 when you are really going WOT. I would recommend the driveway method. To do this you trick your motor into thinking it's going WOT by pushing on the arm attached to your trigger all the way till the stop screw is against the stop(where it would be at WOT). Now you crank the engine(thus the @cranking speed term) and adjust the screw to get your 22 deg. Do this with your plugs out and grounded so it won't start. Then the other stuff should be right but you can verify at real wide open throttle that you have 20 deg.

And as always err to the side of caution aka set the timing a degree or two low if you are not absolutely sure
