ESA troubleshooting

My ESA system is currently not working. I checked it by running the engine and manually clicking the micro-switch that is attached to the shift linkage. Doesnt drop the RPM so I was going to replace it. But I want to make sure I am replacing the right part. Do I need to replace the micro switch that is attached to the shift linkage only? Or do I also need to switch out the shift assist module (little black box with the five wires coming out). Or both....

Just wanted to get some advice or troubleshooting direction before I start throwing parts at it. Thank you.

You should be able to easly meter the switch out to make sure it's working as designed before replacing. You also need to make sure that the ESA module is getting 12v, do you have a manual for the engine with a wiring diagram in it?

Re: ESA troubleshooting

ESA Check for my 1991 4.3lt Cobra with Prestolite distributor, Connect a voltmeter between the blue wire at ESA and ground turn on key and check for 2.5-5.0 volts when shift assist switch is open. Close shift assist switch and check for 0-1.0 volts
