Hi! I am a newbie both here and to outboards...this being the first one I have ever bought or owned. I have not yet gotten a manual for it, and I have a question. On the tiller handle at the throttle end, there is a small rotating knob that has detents in it when I turn it...what the heck is that for?

Also..prior to purchase I checked the following...did I overlook anything?
1. Compression on both cylinders was good. 110 on top 105 on bottom.
2. Good spark on both
3. Started good
4. GREAT water flow from the tube
5. oil in foot looked good with no water
6. prop was in pretty decent shape

Idle was shakey but I discovered they had the wrong plugs in it...it ran fine but would not idle well.

Thanks for the help!

Also...is it possible to get a charging output on this to help top off my batteries? It is a non-electric start. Could it be converted to electric start with minimum fuss?

The knob appears to be an idle speed adjustment (how fast the motor will run when throttle is turned to it's slowest setting). Adding the charge ability would probably cost a bit. You'd be looking at replacing the stator (under the flywheel) and adding a rectifier/regulator etc.
BTW, I show your motor as a 1996....

ED in the model means it is a 1996. The last D doesn't match though. The closest I see is J15REDS. They show a battery charging kit as part number 175899. If you go to Bombardier's website at http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E Choose "OB Accessories" from the Products drop down menu on the second page, You will find the parts list for the charging kit.

The knob is an idle speed set knob. Limits how far down you can turn the throttle grip.

Thanks for the replys..maybe that know is the reason I cant get a stable Idle? Also...on the cups how much smoke should I have out the exhaust? I have ordered a manual so I can check and set the carb...it cant be too tough as I only see one screw with what appears to be a spring under it? Also. I just checked the model. the tag definately reads J15REDD

The last letter in the model indicates any midyear changes that may have been made.
