I put my 1985 webbcraft with a 800 series omc into the lake yesterday and it would'nt go into forward or reverse not even the clunt sound when it goes into gear.
Could my shifter cable be out of adjustment or something worse.

Re: omc not shifting into gear

not enough info to say, but it's more serious than adjustment if no fwd. OR rev.
Look at the shift converter hsg. on top of the intermediate. What's happening with the linkage there?

From info given, could be any number of things....Could be the cable to the helm, could be the cable into the drive, could be mechanical failure like ball gears, coupler rear of engine, or w/p shaft in the drive.

Well between dodging the rain and watching nextel cup race, I was able to find the trouble with my outdrive.
It was the water pump shaft and theres hardly any spline left to it. Pretty well rounded.
Thank you "hystst" for pointing me into the right direction!

Re: omc not shifting into gear

When you replace it - use either Mercruiser spline grease, or Castrol Pyroplex Blue on the splines.... I believe a big part of the failure of those shafts has to do with standard greases washing out of the splines over time despite the little rubber cog seal OMC put there.
The blue hydroactivated greases will not wash out. Smeared some on the outside of my white outdrive and it is still there 100 hours later...like snot to a vest that stuff...
