Vlad,

"the best he can with the resources available."

I think that statement alone says so much about W. He has the most powerful military in the world and every resource known to man and look at the outcome to this point. In my opinion, W's best is less than average.

I would have guessed that, 12 footer!

It's about the only thing he's done that I sort of agree with, except I think it's probably too little, too late!

Re: PRESIDENT BUSH ANNOUNCES $230 MILLION IN AID FOR LEBANON

ya just cannot blame the fledgling Lebbonese govt, while its democratically elected its only about 2 years old. that country was occupied by Syria for some 15 years. Hezbollah's popularity and support came from the suberb good works it did for the poor in lebbanon while the west watched and did nothing but inflict more misery. thats why Hezbollah got so powerful.
but so far Hezbollah, like Hamas, has been very careful not to target americans.
while I destest both the hate groups above I do understand part of what motovates them and why they have such a support base.
both groups have built schools, hospitals, job training centers and aided in providing health care and basic living neccities for a large amount of the very poor in the reagion.
without leaders like Pat Robertson it could have been the US that performed works like Hezbollah and then we would have the support instead of them.
but our brand of aid always seems to come with a religous conversion clause attached.
first ya feed and shelter then deal with religion.

its kinda like Chavez and the US, he says he caught a spy and sent a diplomat packing. in retaliation the administration here pulled the US diplomat from VE. kinda stupid if ya ask me.
in order to maintain at least the apperence of relations and keep eyes in country, ya cant pull diplomats in a *** for tat playground spat.

Bush is sending aid to Lebanon? Aren't they harboring terrorists in Lebanon? Aren't terrorists our enemies?

That's what I've been thinking.

Bush deserves critisism for this one.

Grrrrrrrrrr

I disagree with that comment, the president is doing the right thing, we cannot simply allow the extremists to be the ones funding the rebuilding, for they will be in control of the hearts and minds, 230 million is a miniscule amount to spend on this endeavor, however its a start, what would be nice is to see the other developed nations step up to the plate and do the same especially at the education level, we must not leave any opening for countries like Iran to step into, we have seen the fruits from that tree, it ain't a pretty sight.

Let me toss out a word here to argue your idea of buying friendship with foriegn aid..............

Northern and central Lebanon was under Syrian occupation for about 30 years, southern Lebanon was occupied by Israel for 18 years.
With that in mind it is concievable to believe that subjugation by military might alone cannot and will not resolve this mess.
We must have a vareity of contingencies which will enable us to regain the support needed to defeat the radical entity within the Islamic world.
This costs money, lives and sound common sense diplomacy, we can accomplish this provided there is the will and foresight within our government, in my opinion the President is attempting to make the necessary stand and ought to be at the very least given all of the tools and support this endeavor requires.

Let's not rule out the possibility that what we've set out to do (what is that exactly?) simply cannot be done.

Maybe we can borrow it from Exxon's former CEO, remember he got $440,000,000 of much deserved income at retirment. Sorry could not resist.

Odds are that we did borrow at least some of it from him.

I still don't understand why we aren't taking the oil from Iraq and using the profits for rebuilding the middle East. We are accused of being there for the oil, we may as well benifit from all of that. What I don't understand either is we have played wet nurse to every stink hole in the world at one time or another and we are still hated eeverywhere. These clowns build a few schools and they are loved. I don't think it matters how much money we throw at the problem they are still going to hate us.

right on, ray! Today's gasoline prices are proof that we aren't just there for the oil!

One thing, and I'm not saying this is true in this case, is all that "money" we spend playing "wet nurse" isn't really spent in-country and doesn't always benefit the "baby". Some big U.S. contractor gets a big contract to build, say, a dam in Pakistan, cheap energy, employment for the locals, hooray for us. All the high-paying jobs go to U.S. citizens working over there, the contractor makes millions most of which never gets across the international date line, and we never finish the job, leaving a big huge mess. For example.

Heard an interesting story about the barracks designed & built in Iraq by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, they have huge concrete stoves designed to feed 4 thousand troops - they're falling apart already, two years after being built, at a cost of millions.

I have a feeling rolmops is right, we probably bought a boatload of some U.S. corporation's stale inventory, like HP digital cameras or something, at 2 times retail...

I wonder what the total of monetary aid is that the US has recieved say over the past 75 years from all of the worlds countries combined.I mean if we're to police the world for the next 75 then surely everyone else would want to pony up to help us balance our deficit.Or maybe not.I assure you that that figure isn't chicken feed.
Perhaps just one oil rich Saudi family can begin the bidding.

"world's police" wouldn't be so bad...let's just not try to be "police, district attorney, judge, jury and executioner"

ob, I would bet that the amount of actual money we have recieved from other countries wouldn't buy a happy meal. Usually you hear something like the world bank wants us to charge off a bazzillion or so dollars in loans to some 3rd world country because the dictater wants a new palace or something. If we as a country are stupid enough to do it why would other countries pitch in if they didn't have to? I mean no offense to our Canadian neighbors but the reason they can experiment with their socialist programs is they don't need to spend a lot on military because they know we will protect them. So far I haven't heard about them sending large amounts of cash over to us nor do I expect it. Hint: a break on our fishing licenses would be nice....... 8)

I've never heard that point of view articulated before...very interesting...could it be so?

I'm not disputing you here...just thinking out loud, as it were...who would Canada have to fear...and why, if not for her proximity to the U.S.

And would you make a similar statement about Mexico?

And, do you think military spending is a limiting factor in the U.S. refusal to experiment with socialist programs?

Many people here do not know much about Lebanon. There are many Christians living in lebanon, it isnt a Muslim stronghold.

The Lebanon govt is OK, its Hezbolla that is the bad guys.

Ken

Ken, I do know Lebanon from inside and out. You are right that there are christians there. You are very naive to presume that by merit of being christians, they are also good guys. You can believe me when I write that the Lebanese Maronite Christians are just as cruel as their moslem arab brethren.Almost 40% of Syria is christian.
Religion is not a measuring stick for being good or bad.
