Hello to all here. I'm new to these forums and after looking around it appears to be a likely place to find what I'm looking for. The 25 HP Sea King I'm working on is in need of pistons and rings and I would like to find the original part numbers if possible although I believe that pistons from some of the early Johnson/Evinrude 28 & 30 HP engines are the same, however there appears to one main difference - the J&E engines use needle brgs on the piston pin and Sea King uses bushings. I'm thinking that the pistons are still the same just different rods, however it's hard to prove when I haven't been able to locate any pistons from these engines to compare. The model number on the engine is GG8835A and the serial number is 06x786370. Since the bore size of the OMC 28 & 30 HP engines are the same 2.875" bore this OMC part number 0378884 is very likely the correct part number for standard size pistons. If someone has info that would shed lite on the subject or recommendations on where to find pistons I would be very grateful.

Surf over to the Ask A Member board at http://www.aomci.org if no one here has the answer you're looking for. Those guys are aces at nailing down exact part numbers, particulars for the old iron. Good luck.

Yeah, they should be the same as the 28hp ones. If you want dimentions to confirm I'm sure I've got a couple old 28hp rings around.

Part numbers:
Pistons:
Standard 378884
+.020 378910
+.040 378911

Rings (3 rings per p/n)
Standard 378421
+.020 378422
+.040 378424

The old 30hp and 35hp uses the bushing rod bearings. The needle type didn't come out until '61 (I think) on J/E engines anyway. If you switch them out you can go 50:1. I belive it would be a simple swap but if you want dims again just ask. 28/33/40hp rods are the same.

All those part numbers are NLA, but not totally unobtainable. One almost sure fire place to check is stone & sons marine (google). Dealer head gaskets are also NLA but again not that hard to find, and there's an aftermarket one too.

My parts 28hp is still mostly kicking around here, and I've got a few later parts breakdowns if you need em.

Re: 1960 Sea King 25 HP Pistons & Rings

Paul,

I appreciate the reply and just so's you no's I have a parts listing for almost all of the OMC products as I am a marine dealer, but very seldom have I gotten involved in one of these to this extent and Oversized pistons might possibly be more obtainable, but then the block would need to be bored and this whole thing is starting to get out of hand as it is ( bores are in good enough shape to hone). As for the needle brgs. I'm sure that U meant the piston pin brg./bushings all of the engines U mentioned have needles on the crankpin. I hope to find some pistons or else I might have to go used...............

Much appreciated!

Best regards,
John
