95 Johnson 150 FastStrike surges and no RPM

I have a 1995 Johnson Faststrike that developed a surge at all speeds and won't reach full speed. I also noticed the RPM gauge doesn't work either. Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean by a surge at all speeds - do you mean a miss? Describe the symptoms in a bit mroe detail.

Tach going out is normally a sign of failed rectifier/regulator.

failed rectifier can also short the stator...check your battery voltage with the engine running, if it's not higher than open circuit battery voltage, replace rectifier and try again.

Surging at all speeds, I was referring to the engine rpm increasing and decreasing as if the engine were loading up or flooding. The surging and loss of rpm occurred at the same time. Sorry for the miscommunication. Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, I didn't realize this took the first time I entered this problem. However, thank you for all your replies. I was asked what I meant by surging. I was referring to the engine rpm increasing and decreasing ( though I had no rpm indication ) as if loading up or flooding. Thanks again.

:'(I finally had a chance to check the rectifier and it was bad. It was replaced and now the tach works fine, however, the engine still won't run smoothly. It surges at throttle and only tach's out at 4500 RPM. It should tach out around 5000 to 5500 RPM and reach speeds of 60 + mph. I only run about 50.

Have you checked out the rectifier?
