Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil
ok.. got good news, engine fired up and ran it for 3-4 seconds.. and shut it down, i did not have any water hose hooked up to it! looks like it worked! this is what I did.
I replaced both + & - wires and re-crimped it, wired the coil without the resistor as the Accel coil did not say on it that it needed and external resistor like the original one. It is probably built-in. The original one did say on it that it requires an external resistor, and there was the resistor but it was not hooked up!!! I guess they left it out.. dont know why!
First thing I did was check the spark on cyc 1. with spark plug hooked up to the spark plug cable and touching a ground on the engine, wow was it ever nice!! So placed back the spark plug.. tried starting it after hooking up the gas tank etc.. after 2-3 tries.. it started right up.. I had to raise the lil handle up a bit and depress the choke!
Real test will be over the weekend when I take it out on the water.. I did not check the shifting mechanism, believe it is electric shift.. hope everything is ok with that.
Thanks for all the replies!!

motor i believe is early 70s, .. s/n: c46310 ?
i see a white rectangular diode looking piece with two male connectors right beside the coil but its not hooked up to anything. coil has two wires which are hooked up directly to the wiring block on top of it, but i need to trace where exactly its connected too. belive the weak and no spark problem is related to this coil!?
Well, re-reading the OP it does sound like his coil was wired to the Amplifier since he says both coil wires went to it. So probably not a battery ign conversion after all. My Bad.
