I picked up this boat and would like to restore it next summer. In the mean time I am researching what I need to do. The plywood is in good shape except for one location about 5 inches where it has been warn thin. The varnish has pealed in most locations but the wood is still sound. The lable plate says that it is a home built but a local guy said some place in Nova Scotia used to sell hulls of this type in the 1950's for owners to finish off. Any information on a step by step procedure on what should be done, or where I should look for such information would be great!

I don't have anything specific to offer - but in general you'll want to check www.glenl.com - they specialize in wood boat construction.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of great advice here, but the other site should be on your list for research as well.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the advice so far. I do have pictures on file but will need to get familiar with how to post them. Please give me a day or two or some instructions and I will get them to you.

First thing you have to do is join a pic hosting service, this is the one I use and its free:

http://s93.photobucket.com

Download your pics there, then at the top of the reply box there are some buttons, click the one that looks like a pic. that will bring up a box for the URL of your pic... hit backspace and copy/paste the URL from photobucket.

I know it sounds complicated but it's really not 8)

Almost forgot, edit your pic at photobucket... make it 25% of the original size or it will be way to big here to deal with.

You need to edit the post with the pictures. Instead of putting the URL'S in like this:

URL URL URL URL

put them in like this:

Re: Mahogany plywood boat

Looks like you've got a great boat on your hands. The thin area in your pic looks to be under the water line on the hull? Shouldn't be too much of a problem. I redid the the bottom portion of my hull (was glassed originally) and it came out very nice. If the hull is sound and the boat is complete it looks like a nice boat. I took my time on mine, and went through a bunch of sandpaper, beer, steelwool, beer, varnish, beer, fiberglass, more beer, some gelcoat, and finished up the project with a beer. Total cost of mine was probably more on beer than on materiels...lol

Here is a before, between, and after pic...

That was two years of serious beer drinking...lol
Good luck with your boat...It CAN turn out really great...

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to remember that important ingredient "beer" to my list of supplies. Nice boat! I hope I can make mine look as good as yours! They are supprisingly similar though yours looks like it has a larger motor on it than the max hp stated at 45 for mine.

Sjaspers,

Looking forward to seeing your pic's in progress. I haven't been following the Iboats forums too much this summer, because I've been boating. (It happens..sorry folks)...lol
Bondo is a great source of advice, but he grew up in Maine, so you have to take him with a grain of salt...Ayuh...lol

Keep in mind, a great way to get into rebuilding or refurbishing boats is to have at least one that you can take a ride on and get that great feeling. My current rebuild is taking on new amenities every time I hit the lake.

Or I may just buy a brand new Searay 310..lol

Keep the pic's coming!!

Re: Mahogany plywood boat

I was talking with a local guy and he said that since the spot is on the hull and will be painted anyway I should cut out the worn spot, screw a backing plate to the inside of the hull and then fit a new piece of plywood into the hole. Does that sound good to the rest of you?

That's the procedure I've used. The backer board should be the same thickness as the patch.

Enjoy

Re: Mahogany plywood boat

OK. Summer is almost here and I really hope to find time to work on my boat! I have done some reading here and will pull out a few books as well. My first step will be to strip off whatever varnish and paint that is left. Do people have strong recomendations for that process? I also want to get rid of the grey in the wood. Do I sand that out or should I use some sort of chemical on it?

Thanks to all of you who are so willing to give advice. Sorry for my ignorance on the topic. I will do more research but time keeps escaping me as research takes time and working on a boat seems to rarely be at the top of my priority list. I will find time this summer!!! It will have to be a priority before the thing rots out on me!
