Hello all, I have a 2205 Mercury 150 XR6, carbeurated, oil injected. I have been using the recommended QuickSilver Premium Plus oil and was wondering....recognizing the TCW3 standard rating for oil, are there quality 2 cycle oils available that don't cost $25.00 a gallon (QuickSilver Premium Plus). I don't mind spending the money, but don't need to pay for a 'brand' if I can get the same/better quality for less. I would love to draw from your experiences vs marketing 'hype'. thanks in advance

well, the actual year of the motor is 2005, not 2205....sorry about that.

Look here. if that doesn`t answer your question use the search feature.

Because you are new we won`t fry ya for asking an oil question. We do tend to like them though, they are always good for a bag of popcorn or two!

The answer your question, it will not hurt you engine to use a TC-W3 oil of any make. I use a full synthetic in my merc 150 as I want the added protection, clean running and less smoking.

I use and know lot's of people that use.Super-tec from wal-mart $4.00 a gallon.. They also have some other name brands from $7.00-$10.00 a gallon. You should be o.k with any TC-W3 oil for every day use.

I use a brand in a yellow jug that is a synthetic blend that is less than 10 bucks a gallon. Very little smoking and the V-6 seems to like it pretty well.

like studlyman above, i too use a yellow jug, but mine is fully synthetic and cost almost 40 bucks after tax.

i gained about 3oo rpms or so by doing this.

your motor will run and lubricate itself with anything rated tcw-3 and even some things in red bottles that arent.

After all this discussion, I think I prefer imported green bottles or domestic brown bottles, all in that convenient 12 oz size, and cold of course!

i like the domestic green bottles from pennsylvania that has the horse on the back and the number "33"

serisouly, yes , there are diffrerences. its up to you how important it is that you notice and experience these differences.

as long as it is rated tcw-3 youre good to go.

I was at Wallyworld a little while ago picking up some things and got another gallon of the yellow jug in Prem+, gone up to almost $12 a gallon now, still cheap enough.

gotta admit even those Johnson/Evinrude seminars stressed that TCW-3 was TCW-3.
