I have been going to boat shows and seeing the latest in wood tones. I really like the burlwood .( I know it has been around for a long while)This is where I am stupid... I have heard alot of different woods, but not burlwoood. ( I don;t even know if am spelling it right). When I open a door, it looks like a laminate. Does anyone know if you can buy a good looking burlwood laminate? And where you can get it? I have a project that would look good in that.

Probably Redwood burl. Don't know where you can get it short of going out in the woods in N. CA. and sawing it off a tree... use a quiet saw, most of it is in National forest and will get you time.

You might try Google, there are lots of small mills in Redwood country that sell burl, most of that comes off the stump just above the roots but looks the same, very pretty wood.

Burls, you can see some awesome burls up on the Alaska highway and down throught the Canadian Rockies. People up there seem to collect them. They are like big round growths on the side of a tree, naturally occuring I think. I'm no expert, but I think any species can form a burl, but they're rare and hard to find. When you slice them, you get that burlwood pattern.

Just a thought, go to your local lumber yard (preferably a big one) and ask them about exotic woods. Most of the big ones have a wood expert, worth a try.

Plastic laminate is what it's called actually. The brand name Formica became sort of a generic discription, like Xerox. Wilsonart is another big brand and might have other burl stuff. Any pattern can be ordered by whoever sells 'formica'. Sam
