Oil Strainer - 200HPDI

I had my low oil warning light and alarm activate when I started my engine the other day. Both the remote oil tank and the engine's oil tank were full. So, I read my owner's manual. It said that the oil strainer around the engine's oil tank's float could cause the alarms to activate. Is this strainer OK to clean or should it be replaced? I got the alarm and light to stay off by just wiping the strainer with a rag.
I have also had a problem with this engine oil tank over filling in the past resulting in massive amounts of smoke and plug fouling. I took it in for warranty service and they said they just removed and properly replaced the tank's cap. Thanks, Bert

Re: Oil Strainer - 200HPDI

did you replace the seal on the end of the engine tank oil strainer? if not do so. by removing the strainer you allowed any trash in the tank to fall into the pump intake unless you drained the tank first.
with both tanks full you should not get any alarms. if you do either the ECU is failing, very rare, or the engine oil tank switch is failing.
always drain the engine oil tank before removing the strainer and always use a NEW seal on the strainer tip.
trash in the pump is not a warrenty issue no matter how much damage it causes.

Re: Oil Strainer - 200HPDI

I have a new strainer & seal on order. Thanks for the tip regarding draining the tank first. Are these strainers designed to be cleaned or replaced and how often?

Does the float inside of the strainer only activate the alarms or does it regulate the oil level in the engine's oil tank?

Thanks, Bert

Re: Oil Strainer - 200HPDI

the float is a three positon switch, up and it turns the pump off, half way or so down and it turns the transfer pump on,all the way down and it signals low oil and if the switch in the remote tank is closed will try to continue transfer.
a clogged remote tank filter can block or slow severly the transfer.. the strainer I just clean with spray carb cleaner.
its a mesh type filter.
the oil switches can be tested with a multimeter, unplugging or losing the switch ground while running will trigger a no oil alarm
if the remote tank is full and the engine tank low oil will transfer for 180 seconds, otherwise the engine must be running for transfer.
if the remote tank switch is not plugged in or open you will get a yellow or center bar indication and automatic tranfer is stopped.

on the unplugging or ground loss iof the engine switch I will add that you will get an audible and a visual but NOT RPM reducdtion.
if the strainer is not properly positioned on the switch over filling may occur.
