Can some one tell me the best way to start the motor without being at the lake, can I use a "flush muff" to start this outboard? I cannot find the place for the water intake. If you cannot tell I am new to boat repair. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Your water intake is just above and behind the propeller hanging from the antiventilation plate. I've seen hose attachments for that setup but "muffs" won't work.

You could also run it in a garbage can full of water.

They did tell you to put oil in the gasoline, right?

Your water intake is a black plastic screen that is in the shape of a rectangle about 3"x2" in size.

Running it in a garbage can is best if you are going to be running/starting it to troubleshoot issues you may be having. It will save you water and make much less of a mess. Probably the safest route for a beginner.

You can use muffs when starting that motor, just be careful that the water pressure isnt too high and that the circle suction cup part is fully covering the intake. If it isnt you will lose your prime and the impellor wont pump any water. Pay attention and make sure that water is coming out of the overboard water indicator that is on the engines lower pan on the rightrear (looking from behind). If the pressure is too high the muffs can slip off.

If you run it in a can, make sure the motor is submerged deep enough so that the water pump is underwater. The pump is in the 1st bulge above the anti-cavitation plate. Keep the hose running into the can, because you will soon slop considerable water out and might not be deep enough any more. Muffs work fine, but they are not a good indicator of whether the water pump is any good. When you turn on the hose, you will see water squirting out all over your feet in all directions. After starting the motor, adjust hose pressure so it still squirts, but not so far out. Excessive water pressure can also force water past the drive shaft seal into the gearcase oil.
