1973 Mercruiser carb problem

My '73 mercrusier has a V-8 with a 2 barrel Holly carb on it. It starts good but idles rough in neutral and when I throttle up from a slow crusing speed, it hits a spot where the engine either sputters and then increases speed or it just stalls out. If I push the throttle slow, I can get past that point without stalling but still sputters. The engine runs great when I'm past that point where it gets hung up. What can be the problem? I'm guessing the carb could use a good cleaning but I don't where to get a carb kit. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gary

I got a kit from http://www.amarket.com/index5.htm, it was inexpensive and fairly easy to do.

I also got a gallon of carb cleaner at the local autozone. Got the kind with the basket so you can soak all the parts. you will also need compressed air, either from a compressor or bottled air.

The other thing to check would be your timing............points and plugs!

Thanks for the info. Will there be any adjustments to make once I put it all back together? In response to vipzach, I replaced the plugs, points and distrib. cap. It did make a difference for the better starting up but still have the carb problem.

Do a good days search online for sites walking you through the rebuild. Also there are a multitude of books available on rebuilding carbs at your local bookstore or Amazon. i would invest in your models book.

Your service manual for your engine should have a section on that too.

If you have a digital camera take lots of pictures before and during disassembly at all the linkages so you have a reference if you get stuck.

A carb rebuild is not difficult at all, just take your time and do it right. You will also learn a lot while reading and doing this that will help you troubleshoot issues in the future.

From my personal experience as well as reading through these post, you will get much more helpful information on this board along the way if you also put forth the effort to make yourself knowledgable to the best of your ability before you get stuck on particular issues.
