I just found out that I've got water in my cylinders on the right bank, so it looks like its coming from the exhaust elbow, which is salt water. whats the best way to go about this, pull the head or heads and see what kind of damage I've got in the cylinders. I want to make sure and know the extent of damage. If I have to pull the engine, then thats what i'll do and start over.

Without more information, you won't get much of a reply here. A Year, make, model of your engine might get you a informative reply. 8)

Re: Water in cylinders

First thing you need to do is start the engine with fresh water and get the water out of the cylinders NOW, not tomorrow, NOW. Or you will find the engine if siezed.
If it's siezed from salt water already, you need a new engine.
After you run it, drain the manifold and start the engine for about 10 seconds without water

You might want to check your oil too. Not good when the oil looks like coffee. Sometimes takes a few changes to get it all out too. How I know this?.....don't ask.

Re: Water in cylinders of 5.7 mecruiser

Re: Water in cylinders of 5.7 mecruiser

The engine is a 5.7 mecruiser. I ran fresh water through it as soon as the came out of the water. but I didn't know that water was in the cylinders untill I pulled the plugs last night and discovered water on the plugs and then I looked in the valve cover and noticed rust on the valve springs and brown looking oil around the springs. The reason I pulled the plugs was, the engine was not running right last time out and that was last week. The water must have been making it misfire. The oil on the dipstick doesn't show a sign of water and Iam not making oil, but the oil seems pretty dirty for only a few hours. Thanks for the help, I'll do like Don says

the water might have come through your exhaust there are flapper valves after the manifolds and they can go bad. ours went bad and we thought we had a cracked block we got a new engine and still had the problem until we replaced the flapper valves good luck
