I have a 74 65hp outboard merc with cd distributor, and wanted to know if the plug wire you see in the roll -at the marine parts shop is the correct type to use on my motor(they are both 7mm but my older wire looks thicker).I also had to buy/install new screw in tips to go on the distributor/coil.
Any info is appreciated

Re: plug wire type

I believe if they are solid copper core wires, they will be alright...

Not sure on the cap, but the cylinder firing order is 1-3-2-4. Seems like they used to have the numbers marked on the cap, but it's been awhile since I worked on the old Merc....

I need to know if the thinner wire used on todays newer boat motors will work ok on my 70ish outbard merc 65hp.The newer wire is a bit thinner in the inside than my old original wires.

Laker, Those plug wires screw into the dissy cap. You will need to buy the "screw on ends", and attach them. A better idea is to order new wires from "www.Vintageoutboards.com" or www.oldmercs.com. One of these places has the wires for $5.95 ea.

Laker, Backfire usually means timing is off. Have you checked the timing? Have you got the correct wires on the correct plugs?

Re: plug wire type

Yes pretty sure because I took the other set(cap/wires) and the wires were numbered , installed that one and it fired right up but did not sound like it wanted to keep running well. The new wire set is wired up identically to that set.I ever replaced the coil wire.
So if the fire order is 1 3 2 4 then I could turn the flywheel to tdc on 1st piston to be sure the rotor is in the right spot ? Is the order on the cap clockwise 1st 3rd,2nd, then 4th?
