Hey everyone, just signed up, great f'in place you got here. Tons of help. So let me introduce myself, im Doug, im 19 and just bought my first boat, a 18' Sea Nymph SS175 Fish n Ski with a 88HP Envirude. Ive taken it out a few times and fixed the little glitches that were not taken care of by the previous owner. ie fuel gauge (new ground wire), and put in a new pitot and tube for the speedometer. I'll include some pictures to show everyone.

My question for everyone, it came with a bilge pump, but it is very old and clogged up with junk, instead of cleaning it out I am going to buy a new one with a float switch because the old one didnt have one and I think I would like the peace of mind knowing it will turn on if it needs to. So what kind of bilge pump does everyone reccomed for an 18' alumimum boat. Thanks in advance,

Doug

Re: Hey everyone

welcome diaboy: nice vessel you have there, and imo one of the most reliable engines ever made, as far as a bildge pump if you just want to keep the bildge dry 500/800 gph automatic whatever brand you like ( I prefer rule) will suffice if you are concerned about keeping the boat floating in the event of an emergency the smaller the boat the bigger the pump you need

Re: Hey everyone

I run a 1250 GPH in my boat with a 500 GPH "backup"; probably a bit overkill, but I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I would still keep the old one and clean it out for a backup pump. Can't hurt.

Welcome Doug. Beautiful boat and a great motor. If you didn't already know, make sure when you get the automatic pump that you wire it for manual use too. They all have the wiring for it. You want to be able to flip it on manually. 800-1000 GPH would more than do ya for normal use....

Re: Hey everyone

hi doug, i just remodel a Blue Fin Spectrum, about the size of yours, also aluminum, i has a '88 88 Special, topped out at 45mph, which for me is plenty fast. i installed an 800gph Rule Automatic, it lasted 2 weeks, water after and overnight rain the the Fl Keys, i had 6" of water above the floor, the auto switch never turned on,(yes it had been tested several times) when i turn on the manual switch it pumped for about 2 minutes, and quit. water had intruded the (sealed) electrical housing and shorted it out. now fighting warranty. this time i will do as Studly suggest and have 2 pumps. good luck

Re: Hey everyone

Welcome Doug. Looks like a great 1st boat. Very similar to my aluminum Crestliner 17 fish and ski. Be aware that there a two types of automatic pumps. One type cycles on every few minutes to determine if water is present. If so it continues to run until it senses that it is pumping air. I don't see much point in this design as it seems that it would drain the battery unnecessarily and would wear out sooner. The second type of course has a built in float switch. Most are wired to run automatically when water trips the switch, but can also be turned on manually with the bilge pump switch. I am also going to upgrade to an automatic pump and like the looks of the Attwood Sahara 750. Good luck with your new boat and take a boating safety class if you haven't allready do so. I've been boating for thirty years and still learned a lot.
