OMC Sterndrive won't go into gear

friend of mine took his "new" boat out today hit the no wake buoy and it took off fine. He came back to the beach and picked some people up and when he was going back out it came out of gear and won't go back into gear forward or reverse. I suggested he check for power at the shifter as it is electric. Any other ideas?

Check the fuses.... buy a service manual.

have a look and see if the ball gears are turning.

If you own a OMC you need a service manual. Shifting of OMC sterndrives basically put them out of business. Even with the service manual, shifting will be an on going frustration for many years to come. I had an 87 4.3 with an omc and it drove me crazy (along with many $$$$) There are several service bulletins out on it too. The Seloc repair manual is pretty good at showing how to rig the shift system along with the OMC service bulletins.
